Summary
D'origine aristocratique, Winston Churchill entame une carrière politique en 1900. D'abord député conservateur puis libéral, plusieurs fois ministre de 1906 à 1929, il est élu aux communes en 1924. Dans les années 1930, il multiplie les avertissements contre l'Allemagne hitlérienne. Premier ministre de l'Angleterre en 1940, il incarne la résistance face au nazisme. Véritable chef de guerre fermement décidé à mener son pays à la victoire, il se rapproche des Etats-Unis et signe avec Roosevelt la Charte de l'Atlantique en août 1941. Il conclut également un accord avec Staline tout en restant vigilant à l'égard des communistes. Leader du parti conservateur, il est l'un des protagonistes de la victoire alliée sur l'Axe.
Battu aux élections de 1945, il reste un personnage politique influent en dénonçant "le rideau de fer" et l'expansionnisme soviétique. Réélu en 1951, il restera au pouvoir jusqu'en 1954 avant de se retirer de la vie politique. Prix Nobel de littérature en 1953, il meurt à Londres en 1965.
