About this listen

When Darkness Calls is the first in a crime thriller series starring forensic psychologist Holly Wakefield. For fans of Patricia Cornwell, Val McDermid, Robert Galbraith and the TV crime series Luther and Strike.

Do you dare to look into the eye of a serial killer?

Holly Wakefield works for the NHS as a criminal psychologist specialising in serial killers. She has particular reason to be good at her job - but she keeps that to herself.

When DI Bishop from the Met Police approaches Holly to investigate a recent killing, Holly is horrified by the dismembered bodies and the way they have been theatrically positioned. More shocking still is when the pathologist reveals this is not the first time she has seen these mutilations. It means a serial killer is out there, and they're going to kill again - soon.

Holly is used to chasing serial killers. But this killer has something in common with Holly that she's kept hidden for as long as she can remember. And for the first time since she was a child, Holly is forced to face the darkness of her past....

A gripping thriller set in London, featuring a criminal psychologist who specialises in hunting serial killers and has hidden reasons for being unnervingly good at her job....

Critic reviews

Mark Griffin is a thrilling new talent, destined to become a big name in British crime writing (Peter James)
Wow. I read this in less than a day. As many twists and turns as a rollercoaster! A fascinating lead character with a deliciously dark secret. It's the kind of writing which grabs you and won't let you go (Amy Lloyd, bestselling author of The Innocent Wife)
Meticulously plotted and devious in its execution, Mark Griffin's debut novel is utterly compelling. I can't wait to read the rest of the Holly Wakefield series (Lesley Kara, bestselling author of The Rumour)
All stars
Most relevant
A reasonable detective thriller but several gaping plot holes
A 'profiler' (though the term is generally not used in the UK) with no obvious qualifications, no concept of patient confidentiality and who realistically would never form part of a murder investigation team without any case she's involved in getting thrown out of court due to (unrealistic spoiler). Ditto, that due to (spoiler) it is vanishingly unlikely she'd be employed in her job.
A police team with zero knowledge of obvious and high profile serial killers
A Police DI who sends the SIO home from a serial murder investigation to 'spend time with his family'
Characterisation is poor and storyline seems utterly implausible - certainly not on the level of Val McDermid or Robert Galbraith

A thoroughly thrilling plot, given life by a fantastic performance. Rounded characters in a realistic, visual landscape.
Well above being a simple thriller.

Magnificent

This story was a little too depraved for my taste, unfortunately. I liked the relationship between Bishop and Holly, but I became somewhat confused as the book continued.
The saying 'attention to detail' springs to mind; there is too much detail in the gruesome killings for my liking, and I'll leave this series to others.

It's just not for me :(

3/5

A well thought out tale, but..

This was a totally absorbing and highly rewarding story about a profiler with a secret or two, a series of brutal crimes stretching back futher than anyone could have known and a startling finale.

Tamsin Kennard narrated it beautifully, she is fast becoming one of my favourite narrators.

I wholeheartedly recommend this title and am hoping there will be a book 2 about Holly in the near future.

100% recommended

A really great start to this new series. Holly Wakefield and DI Bishop make a good team. I love the insights into The criminal mind, really looking forward to book 2.

Enjoyable
