Summary

Marnie Logan often feels like she's being watched. Nothing she can quite put her finger on - a whisper of breath on the back of her neck, or a shadow in the corner of her eye - and now her life is frozen. Her husband Daniel has been missing for more than a year.

Depressed and increasingly desperate, she seeks the help of clinical psychologist Joe O'Loughlin. Joe is concerned by Marnie's reluctance to talk about the past, but then she discovers a book packed with pictures, interviews with friends, former teachers, old flames and workmates Daniel was preparing for her birthday. It was supposed to be a celebration of her life. But it's not the story anyone was expecting...

Another brilliant Joe O'Loughlin novel with perfect narration from Sean Barrett. I wish it had gone on longer and I should have rationed it out in smaller sections. Anyway it gave me 3 great days of listening pleasure. This is a superb series of books.

Very interesting plot, likeable characters. Lots of twists and excitement. I have really enjoyed listening to this. Nicely narrated too.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Without doubt. The thing is, it was not predictable. At every chapter there was a twist, but it was not a twist for the sake of a twist, nor was it unlikely. I found all the plot to be plausible.

What did you like best about this story?

The book created an atmosphere of being watched...as intended. Even when not listening to the book, there was a legacy of suspicion, paranoia in the back of my mind. How sad is it that I deliberately created driving chores and went to bed early....in order to find out what was happening next....!!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The last two minutes.... Great characters, great character interplay and yip. the sting in the tail....

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

....you might NOT be that paranoid....

Any additional comments?

I must comment on the talents of the narrator, Sean Barrett.
Absolutely fabulous performance. Super super super.

Michael Robotham has come up trumps once again with this superb psychological thriller.
Psychologist Joe O'lochlin and retired detective Vincent Ruiz become embroiled in the case, when one of O'lochlin's patients, who's husband has been missing for more than a year, becomes the main suspect in a murder case.
Michael Robotham has here crafted a multi layered tale, that deals with the psychological impact of childhood trauma and in particular, the way it affects the victims as adults.
Written with great precision, the author steadily builds the tension and managed to surprise me on several occasions.
Perhaps it is best to read the Joe O'lochlin books in order, but it is still a great stand alone novel. As usual Sean Barrett is superb. Very highly recommended.

Top Notch Psychological Thriller

I found Michael Robotham's novel unputdownable, as it were. At times I made myself stop listening, as at others I just ignored things that I needed to do. This is my first of his novels, but definitely not my last. If you enjoy fast-paced writing that carries you along, this is for you.
Of course, part of this feeling is created by Sean Barrett's narration. When you see his name on a book it guarantees a good performance, in my experience. He seems to be able to bring out the best in a story, whatever it is. I've heard so many good readings from him that I no longer find it possible to say which is his best.
This book has a mystery, but it's not too difficult to work it out, the clues are all there. It is in the telling that the books' strength lies. Definitely worth a listen!

A real page-turner.
