Summary

Progress is a constant state of learning and unlearning.

Writer, curator and producer Liv Little questions our modern understanding of big subjects – consent, race, transness, disability and body image – by learning more about their past.

Unlearn addresses a series of uniquely modern dilemmas: how did we get to the point where couples verify consent to have sex with each other via an app? How has our language about trans issues become so problematic and challenging? Is it possible for us to unpick the toxic understanding we have of our own body image?

Liv talks to contributors from across generational lines about what they’ve learnt and unlearnt during their lifetime in relation to these subjects. Has the progress that was made by each generation been positive? Or has it set us up for a more complicated present and future? And if progress is a constant state of unlearning the knowledge that’s passed on from generation to generation, what comes next?

Never usually leave reviews

I never usually write reviews, however felt obligated with this one.

I listened to this series with an open mindset from the outset.
What became clear very quickly was that there was a victim mindset & an agenda of victimisation throughout.
There are no doubt issues in certain areas of society & the media, this audiobook makes it seem like it’s an epidemic & systemic throughout all of society.
Rather than complain about these areas & feel hard done by particularly with social media.
Simply blocking media or not interacting with media you could potentially be offended by is a simple solution day to day.
Some of the statistics given in this audiobook are simply incorrect & anyone educated can do the math to realise that they are so.

If people choose to listen to this audiobook, do so with an open mind & do not take all the information as fact; an approach that all media should be consumed.
Listen to multiple sources & form your own opinion.

Not as enlightening as I’d thought

Thought I’d hear some deeper incite from this but it seemed more run of the mill accounts from people of their personal experience from their view point.

Great concept - want to hear more

The inter-generational debate table is usually kept sacred for Christmas dinner, but this podcast cracks open the format, covering a topic from the lived experiences of people throughout time, unapologetically and head on. My only critique is that I want more! Liv handles conversation like a pro, particularly when it takes a wayward turn in the body image episode. But these are important conversations to have, and they are illuminating rather than infuriating. People of all ages could do with listening, taking note, and then engaging in the conversation with their community. There is a lot to unlearn.

Fresh, just would have loved a little more depth

These topics are important to me, I follow them all; and I heard a few lesser heard outlooks. But they are hugely important and they were so well handled here that it would have been good to have less of a skimmed over view and more of a real examination with action points and advice. Something to build on?

Biased and Poor

I felt genuinely offended listening to this.
I was keen to learn about all of the chapters listed and found myself floundering as to how to approach anyone genuinely nicely. The acceptable terms and titles are confusing and there is no tolerance for ‘ignorant’ people like myself in terms of address.
This is one sided, hugely opinionated and actually offensive.
I am a considerate person- kind and polite and it has alienated me and confused me as to how I should kindly communicate with people
Hopefully this author is in a minority

Lacked structure and conclusions

Disappointing, this was patchy . Some insightful contributions from guests and some enlightening statistics but not life-changing. Shame because I was interested in the topics and wanted something more concrete.

Thought-provoking & interesting

I've loved every episode of this series. I felt like I dipped into many personal areas that invited me again to widen my perspective in a healthy way. Loved it and would love to hear more from Liv Little. Thank you.

Must listen

It was soo interesting and educational and it helped me realised the views I hold and that society holds can be wrong, and if they are we must change them
