Summary

Nineteen-year-old Nessa Thorne expects death when she volunteers for Empire's selection. Instead, she's thrust into Confluence Academy, where students harness elemental magic and bond powerful beasts—from wolves to ancient dragons—forging themselves into the Empire's most lethal weapons.

Students are branded by affinity: water, air, earth, or fire. But Nessa's mark is different. A silver spiral—the mark of an unbound. It's a power so dangerous her kind were hunted to extinction centuries ago—or so the Empire claims.

To survive, she must hide what she is in a castle that reeks of blood, where students kill each other for advantage, and failing to tether an elemental means death.

Nessa's greatest threat may be the only other volunteer—Raith Hollow, a powerful fire affinity whose scorching gaze follows her every move and whose secrets could topple kingdoms.

Alliances are forged in blood, enemies circle like vultures, and forbidden desires close in. Death once seemed like a release from her tragic past. Now it's not an option. She'll embrace her terrible potential or watch everything she's fought for burn.

At Confluence Academy, students leave as weapons... or they don't leave at all.

A delicious slow-burning romance as dangerous as the magic? Check. A final line that will haunt you for weeks? Double check. An ending that will leave you desperate for book two? Absolutely.

The story is very familiar it at the same time welcome. I wish more time was spent enjoying the school side of the story and learning magic and skills. Overall really strong audio book and would not hesitate in purchasing that second book.

Fourth wing meets hunger games

My biggest problem with this, is it is pretty much just a copy of Fourth Wing. It is like 'eh, that sold well, I'll analyze it and try to write something really similar'. It isn't different enough to even be considered 'inspired by'. It feels like the author just went through and created a checklist and then made sure to hit all the points, making it a really odd and a bit disjointed book to listen to.

But I guess if you liked Fourth Wing, and want to listen to an uninspiring and confusing version of it, written by a husband and wife team (he writes, she helps with editing and social media), this might be what you're looking for? Oh, and they are followed around and battle with their water/fire type monsters that evolve.... So toss in a pokemon feeling there too.

Story:
Why do all the characters instantly hate each other? Why are there so many completely unhinged characters? And why are there so many war academy stories that try to kill off 80% of their forced applicants? Like how is this a good use of resources? I usually love a long, well-written book. But there are so many scenes that don't move the story forward, don't give more details about characters, etc. Just empty fluff. I can't even figure out what the plot is beyond 'staying alive'. 22 hours of staying alive and why are people trying to kill everyone anyways? And why on earth are they not using their elementals for advice, spying, knowledge, etc.

Characters:
Nessa both trusts, and doesn't trust EVERYONE. The majority of the plot seems to be her trust issues. Both trusting people that she should NOT trust, despite extensive reasons why she shouldn't trust them. And not trusting those who she really obviously should trust.
"Here's this guy who has helped you at every stage, your elemental trusts him" <---- she doesn't trust him
"Here's this creepy guy, who you have been warned about constantly." <---- total trust!
"Here's a guy who has actively tried to kill you multiple times and has killed others while you are watching" <-- save his life!

Narration:
Rachel Leblang does a great job with Nessa, but a horrible time with all the other characters. I have a hard time telling the difference in voice between the creepy rector dude and her elemental. It is the same voice most of the time and it confuses me. Then there is the odd russian/french accents going for some of the characters, that seems to vary chapter by chapter.

Conclusion:
You should probably save your credit. This was hard to get through. I almost DNF'ed multiple times and 22 hours is a LONG time to be on the edge of not finishing a book.

Reads like a Checklist ...

The story was good but just too much repetition dragging out the story . That made the story weak to me. The female narrator did her best doing so many male characters voices but it was so confusing to listen to… that for me made my “visual” of the male characters weak (sorry 🫣). Then suddenly there was a real male narrator towards the end of the book 🤨 … like NOPE the momentum is gone … also too confusing 🫤. I hope the next book narration is more duo

I was hooked from the start. Reminded me of a mix of zodiac academy and fourth wing. This is now one of my top reads and i read over 250 romance books a year. I cannot wait for the next instalment. The narrator was also brilliant.

Brilliantly Epic, l loved it

Anthony only narrates a couple of chapters at the end. I find it hard to picture Raith and a man rather than a school boy due to the female narrator doing his voice.

I enjoyed this book. Easy listening. Not a duel narration.
