Tricky
About this listen
Tricky is one of the most original music artists to emerge from the UK in the past 30 years. His signature sound, coupled with deep, questioning lyrics, took the UK by storm in the early 1990s and was part of the soundtrack that defined the post-rave generation.
This unique, no-holds barred autobiography is not only a portrait of an incredible artist - it is also a gripping slice of social history packed with extraordinary anecdotes and voices from the margins of society.
Tricky examines how his creativity has helped him find a different path to that of his relatives, some of whom were bare-knuckle fighters and gangsters, and how his mother's suicide has had a lifelong effect on him, both creatively and psychologically. With his unique heritage and experience, his story will be one of the most talked-about music autobiographies of the decade.

The story, is as you would expect, colourful full of ups and downs. The council estate lad done good, rags to riches etc so to that end the story is very good. He does talk about his approach to song writing etc which is very interesting. I already knew that Tricky had a dark side to his persona so i wasn't surprised to find that coming out throughout the story and when you listen to his up bringing you understand why he has the outlook on things that he does.Although i did struggle with the constant "i really don't care about anything but i influenced this" and "i wasn't bothered if anybody listened to my music but why didn't i win that award". I got the feeling that he felt he had a persona to live up to, to paint a certain picture of himself but then juxtapose it with a contrasting point of view. An example of this would be he would continually talk about how he never wanted people to come to his dressing room after his gigs, he wanted to be alone but when, say for instance, David Bowie wanted to come to his dressing room he would complain about the person, how they acted, what they said or didn't say!!!! If you don't want ANYBODY there then why complain about what you expected from them???......it just didn't all add up sometimes but its a great, very entertaining listen.
Its narrated in a west country accent, first person style (Tricky is from Bristol if you didn't know?), and the narration does take some time to get used to. What i did love about the narration is that all the characters in Trickys story have there own separate narrater, from sister to manager to school friends, which gives the story extra depth, which i loved.
All in all very entertaining

Wouldve been best read by the man himself...the storyteller lacked depth with his over enthused exclaimings !! It needed to be told in darker hues...textured with genuine depth of experience. I oscillated between liking him.and wanting him to do one...the shouty mouth little prick .( Pacifist my arse). But Legend all the same. inspired to listen to his sonic journey now. see if he is as good as he proclaims himself to be or are they just the last rantings of an indulged delusional ex been. lets see....the mind is a Tricky place to Be.
