About this listen

England in the 14th Century. Twelve-year-old Robin’s world is turned upside down when his father, the Earl of Waringham, dies in disgrace. His inheritance lost and his family name dishonoured, the penniless Robin must begin a new life as a peasant on his own estate.

He soon makes an enemy in Mortimer, the spoiled young son of the new Earl. As the years pass and the boys enter adulthood, Robin flees Waringham to seek his fortune abroad. In Aquitaine he encounters the Black Prince and the charismatic Duke of Lancaster, and against all odds he begins to restore his position among the nobility. But Robin will need all his ingenuity to navigate these most dangerous and turbulent of times.

In the first of a six-part epic, medieval Europe is brought to life in a multi-cast drama based on the novels by Rebecca Gable, author of the Scarlet City trilogy.

Narrated by Miriam Margolyes, OBE (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Romeo + Juliet, Mulan) and featuring a full cast.

Featuring: Ethan Alston, Daniel Anthony, Gareth Armstrong, Nick Brimble, Imogen Church, Clare Corbett, Raymond Coulthard, Gareth David-Lloyd, Barnaby Edwards, Jonathan Firth, Philip Franks, Raj Ghatak, Anthony Howell, Samuel Ide, Joe Jameson, Mack Keith-Roach, Jacqueline King, Damian Lynch, Michael Maloney, Miriam Margolyes, Barry McCarthy, George Naylor, Nicholas Pegg, Vineeta Rishi, Paul Shelley and Finty Williams.

Much like the Apprentice series by the same author, this is a great yarn, and most enjoyable.

The downside however is....

There seems to be two different versions of the script. The narrator calls the main character Robin, however it seems the rest of the cast have a different version, as they all refer to him as Robert. This happens throughout, but different actors, so must have been there on the page for them to read.

Also Miriam Margolyes seems to think she is narrating for children.

However, it is a good story, and i am looking forward to the further five parts.

Good story and very enjoyable, but...

Personally I think these books are the best on audible, I listened to the scarlet city trilogy and loved them. Gable is an excellent author one of the best around and this is as good as her previous and extremely well narrated. Look forward to book 2.

Love these books

Excellent beginning to what looks be a great epic. Brilliant performance from the cast involved with relaxing and captivating narration by Miriam Margolyes.

Fantastic writing from Rebecca Gable, grounding her characters with all the woes and wonders of the human spirit.

Listened regularly before bed and ended up staying up an hour or two longer than I should just to hear what happens next. Can't wait for the next parts, my only annoyance is the long wait until I get to listen to them!

Excellent beginning to an epic adventure

I loved this as much as the Apprentice series. these full cast productions are what audiobooks were made for. It felt more like experiencing a show than reading a book, the cast are that good. I can't wait until the next one is released.

Outstanding

The original novel (in German) is my favourite novel of all time and I was unsure how this would work out as an audio play in English but gave it a try.
I'm soooo glad I did! An absolutely amazing audio play & true cinema for the mind. Miriam Margolyes is a fantastic narrator, and I love how Raj Ghatak brings Robin to life. I like this better than the German version, despite the odd little hiccup (e.g. Isaac being born and bred in Kent, but speaking with a West Country accent).
Audible, please could we now have the subsequent Waringham Chronicles in English as well (and the prequel)?

Love every minute of this
