About this listen

It is 1931, and once again Europe is heading towards disaster. Life must go on however, and a new generation of the Neyler family are making their way in this turbulent world. Louis Rose, the self-confessed black sheep of the family, returns to England for his father's funeral and is greeted with more bad news: he has lost his mistress to his young nephew.

Louis' son Simon, meanwhile, has matured and is embarking on his first love affair. Valentine Neyler, Simon's cousin, visits Berlin for the Olympics, but finds herself experiencing first-hand the prejudice which is gripping Germany. Before she knows it she is caught up in the tragedy of a Jewish family struggling to escape the Nazi horror.

Really good presentation and I was hooked from start to finish. Can’t wait to read the last book of the series.

This book was true page Turner from start to finish and I really enjoyed it following through from previous books in the series

I am really enjoying the trilogies in the life of the nailers , I am looking forward to starting the next one

Brilliant

If each part of this series was in one book it would be the equally to a British version of War and Peace and would probably not be read. We were drawn into the creation of the Nayler family in the first book and each generation has added to the family history and their place during these times. Brilliantly written with an abundance of characters you care for. Lots of lessons in love in the past and the innocence of it and the consequences of the time.

It’s about a family, their challenges, history and how this family was affected and love, be it from family, friends or lovers.

1 book left and I already know that I will feel bereft when I am no longer a part of the Nayler family

The real life behind the history of the war and the atrocities that were happening in Germany before the war

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who cannot remember the story - so disappointing as each book i.e. The Pride, The Glory and The Splendour is mostly a repeat of the previous book!

What was most disappointing about Katie Flynn’s story?

Repetition of previous books in the Series.

What three words best describe Anne Dover’s voice?

Pleasant, easy to listen to.
Anne as the narrator "sold" the series to me
What a shame she had to narrate such a repetitive series

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointed that I had wasted 3 credits, annoyance that the time wasted listening to the series of 3 in the hope that they would improve!

Any additional comments?

The first 2 books Audible have refunded the credits.
But not the third which I gave up on after a couple of hours listening.
Why is this?

What a waste of 3 credits

I enjoyed this book especially as Ann Dover read it so very beautifully ! but as time went on the story’s diversity and branches of the original family became complicated and confusing .However I am looking forward to hearing this final book and hoping that it will be clearer and end more satisfactorily .

A good family saga , diverse characters
