Summary
DI Amy Winter knows evil. She’s lived through it.
Four-year-old Ellen is snatched by a stranger in the dead of night. Her devastated mother, Nicole, receives four identical phials and a threatening note in a familiar scrawl that chills her to the bone. But she always knew this would happen. She’s been expecting it for years....
According to the note, one of the phials is poisoned. Nicole is given a deadly challenge: if she drinks one, the sadistic kidnapper will notify the police of Ellen’s location. The sender claims to be Luka Volkov, but Luka is supposed to be dead, killed long ago in a fire that haunts all those involved.
DI Amy Winter is still reeling from the discovery that she is the daughter of a serial killer, and her childhood trauma only makes her more determined to bring Ellen home. When another child is taken, Amy finds herself in a race against time. To rescue the children, must she seek help from the one person she wants to forget.

Someone give the narrator a cold shower
The book would have been better with a much stricter editor - lots of mistakes, repeated phrases, everything hugely overblown. The narrator is also doing a full-on Nigella impression that really doesn’t work for a crime novel. I’d recommend giving this one a miss.

Irritating Naration
I was unable to listen to this for more than ten minutes. The whispery narration seemed completely innapropriate to the content. It put me in mind of a mother telling a small child a slightly scary story! A very strange choice for a series of thrillers.
I've rated the story with 3 stars out of fairness to the author who surely cannot be blamed for the choice of narrator?

The Worst Narrator on Audible?
Ruined by the ridiculous over-emoting of the narrator. Every single sentence, every single word, regardless of context, is dripping with the sort of faux foreboding a first year drama student would cringe at.
The rest of the book is ok and would be listenable enough but it's difficult getting beyond the poor narration.

The narration is appalling
The narrator was shockingly bad in this recordeing. I really enjoyed how the first book in the series was read but in this one I found myself screaming at it in frustration.
The narrator tried to put suspense in every single sentence even when it wasnt need so in the end it detracted from what was a good story line.
I am not sure I can stomach listening to that narrator again.

Great sequel
Really enjoyed listening and felt the narrative around Amy followed on well from first book. She is a little frustrating though. Narrator works for this series but takes some getting used to. Would like to have heard what happened to the doctor!

is this the correct performer for a murder mystery
Putting the grisly tale aside, I'm not sure I'll listen to another Amy novel. The performer sounds as if she's whispering sweet nothings in my ear or is about to break into a Masterchef description of the contestant's latest dish.
This may sound pleasant, but it doesn't really suit a murder mystery - in my opinion.

Unsure......
Two books read and I'm more and more convinced that I just don't like the main character , Amy. The narrator, Elizabeth Knowelden however is superb, I could listen to her all day.
