About this listen

From the winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature

A contemporary classic, The Remains of the Day is Kazuo Ishiguro's beautiful and haunting evocation of life between the wars in a Great English House. In the summer of 1956, Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, embarks on a leisurely holiday that will take him deep into the countryside - and into his past.

Brilliantly narrated, very fine critique of the "necessary illusion" through which the servant lived, and lost, his life.
Excellent. Tragic.

Worth repeat listening. Brilliant

I thoroughly enjoyed it, brilliantly performed and delightfully paced. The second half is especially terrific.

Dominic West is fantastic.

I loved this book. I’d seen the film but as you’d expect the book is richer and includes many subtleties the film misses. I wonder if the narrator has seen the film because his delivery of Mr Stevens’ lines reminded me of Anthony Hopkins’ performance. Not a criticism! Narration is excellent. As the story is told in the first person, the reader is left to fill in the gaps and make observations that Stevens cannot or does not want to make. Gently heartbreaking but also heart warming and funny in parts. A wonderful book and I’m not surprised it has the reputation it does.

Beautiful

When this book started I was really unsure where it would be heading. But it was incredible at drawing you in and revealing plot little by little along the way. The accents were also great!

Slow and steady

A wonderful read. The narration is among the best I listened to all year. Although not much happens I was fully immersed into the character and his World.

A great book with a stellar(!) narrator.
