Summary

Princess Kassie, the daughter of the chess goddess Caïssa and the god of war, Mars, lives a charmed life in the dazzling kingdom of Chess Mountain, where chess pieces are alive and flourish as loyal citizens. But on Kassie's 12th birthday, her best friend Dimitri mysteriously disappears and her parents are blamed. Kassie’s world shatters. War is declared, and the young princess is whisked away to dreaded Earth on a mission to strengthen her kingdom. Chaperoned by a trusted knight, Kassie lives undercover as a mortal student in a chess-loving classroom. To her amazement, she finds much in common with her human classmates.

By sharing the magic of chess thinking, Kassie empowers her newfound friends to better face their troubles, including family issues, physical challenges, and a class bully. But mysterious events and shocking clues reveal that kingdom enemies in disguise may be near, and it is hard to tell friend from foe. Princess Kassie must choose whether to cut her mission short or risk everything to protect Chess Mountain. And when the ultimate reveal takes place, Kassie must make her move—with no time to spare.
