When Darius receives an invitation to attend the Training Grounds, he wonders why an insignificant farm boy would be asked to join the most elite training academy in Merchant Valley. The only thing special about him is that he has unsettling visions he can’t understand. Despite the unknown, he accepts this privilege, and with his best friend, they set out on this new adventure. While there, they quickly form alliances with a skilled archer, a talented blacksmith, and a powerful wielder of the elements.

Together, this new band of friends will learn that not all is as it seems at this new school. In fact, secret plots abound. It makes them question everything and everyone, including the head of the school, Dean Anders. Now it’s up to this adventurous group to uncover the truth about their world and find out the meaning of Darius’s vision. Visions that include a weapon known as the reaper that carries with it apocalyptic repercussions. But between classes, finding love, and training, will he and his friends be able to discover the truth before it’s too late?

Wow, that was a long book! I enjoyed it a lot, Fairly standard young adult/superpowers (magic), but a good, well crafted plot and story. Lots of ups and downs with maybe a little to much agonising over relationships, which I find to be a common trope in most books these days. I guess it helps pad it out. The narration was excellent with a wide variety of voices for the varioius characters, even if some of them were rather over the top, but quite a tour de force from Mr Treselyan. Very enjoyable.

I felt the narrator was perfect for this story. Their tone and voice choices for the characters were spot on and brought me into the narrative from the beginning. The book was a brilliant mix of magical fantasy and a coming-of-age story. I was impressed with the creative world-building and magical elements of the different spirit wielding for earth, air and water. The inclusion of a skills competition which showcased the academy’s student battling each other in hand-to-hand combat as well as magical manipulation added depth to the story. The overarching mystery of what occurred in the past that all knowledge disappeared before a certain point and the ominous visions that Darius had of the Reaper ensured that the story kept me engaged and intrigued by what was going to happen next. I liked the coming age aspect of the story and the elements of found family as the band of friends came together to discover the truth and compete in the tournament.

Overall, it was a compelling first book in this series and I look forward to reading the next instalment.

I love books that invite the reader into the story through the eyes of a young, unassuming hero. It's the underdog trope that I will forever love. Darius's journey is one of action and adventure. Thru his eyes, we see this world of magic and power. As he comes into his abilities we learn more and more about the universe the author creates. It's entertaining and exciting. I can't wait for the next book!

The Training Grounds mystery of the immortal by Jason Clark.
Book one of the training grounds.
Listening Length 18 hours and 47 minutes.
Narrator Jamie Treselyan.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I loved the Narrator. It really opened my mind to the story. I loved Darius, Simon, Oakes, Adelaide, and Millicent. I wasn't sure how I felt about Dean. I didn't trust him. really didn't like Belladonna, or Donavan at all. I loved Skeet and how he was. This book has everything i love. Mages, immortals, apocalyptic visions, battles, and tournaments. It felt like I was there watching everything happening. I can't believe this is a debut. I love the writing style and the story. What a cliffhanger. Please hurry with book 2. I definitely recommend this book.
