About this listen

Orphaned by Monsters. Matt must power up to save others from the same fate.

Matt plans to delve the rifts responsible for the monsters that destroyed his city and murdered his parents. But his dreams are crushed when his Tier 1 Talent is rated as detrimental and no guild or group will take him.

Working at a nearby inn, he meets a mysterious and powerful couple. They give him a chance to join the Path of Ascension, an empire-wide race to ascend the Tiers and become living legends.

With their recommendation and a stolen Skill, Matt begins his journey to the peak of power. Maybe then, he can get vengeance he seeks....

Experience the start of an action-packed fantasy adventure that blends everything you love about LitRPG with Xianxia. With five million views on Royal Road, this hit web serial is new and improved and now available.

About the series: This is a mix between LitRPG and Xianxia. It's like a car that looks like a LitRPG with dungeons and skills, but the interior and engine are all Xianxia. It features a magic system and progression system that are logically and internally consistent, as well as realistic fight scenes and a rational MC.

The story is enthralling and something I want to have more of. The growth of the characters is realistic and endearing. And the way they talk about things like periods, same sex relationships, mental health, therapy and sex is mutch more talked about, open minded and unstigmatized than what one would expect after living in the current sosiety.

The narration is a bit odd at the start but it slowly shows a charm and personality

Unusual but a new favourite

this is a more of a review of the whole series but no spoilers to help you know if it's worth investing time in.
tldr It is worth your time and a great series

World and progression
this is a really great stand out in the genre with a very considered expanding world over the coming books. I was worried when it lurched into meeting a very powerful person quite early that it would burn through any real development and get to end of the universe power levels too quickly. but it actually progresses really well with incremental increases still feeling good.

Combat Vs Story
I can struggle with some progression fantasy having great worlds but combat is just characters shouting special attacks that gradually become incomprehensible and a bit cringe. Path of Ascension avoids this focusing on a more rock paper scissors approach and fights that very seldom become uninteresting helped a lot by the delivery. The story as the other half is very interesting exploring different kinds of settings with larger and smaller conflicts and perils.

Performance
performance is very good I'd like to have put it at 4.5 but that's not possible.I think some more variety in the voices and accents would really help as the cast gets larger this can become hard to differentiate.

great progression and mechanics

I really enjoyed the story but there are several things which bugged me out. The MC begins his journey at 13 he starts his adventure around the age of 14, that would be okay however the way the author speaks about his interactions with girls seems far too adultish. Also, the way other characters treat the young MC's feel as if they're talking to adults.

Secondly, the narrator does something rather annoying. He announces all skills in a system voice whenever anyone says the skill, I think in one instance he mentioned several skills in a paragraph. It was grating on the ears.

But with all said and done. this is a good book, I will more than likely get book 2 because it was a fun listen. The story universe is huge, the MC is actually a small fish in a big pond FOR ONCE. and ultimately he is not one of those OP characters, you see him lose and struggle which is nice as it adds realism.

I think without the silly audio I'll rate the story alone as a 4.5/5.
