Summary

Having recovered from the wounds of battle and having won for himself a fortune, a crew, and a longship, Thorgrim Night Wolf makes ready to leave the Viking town of Dubh-linn for the long journey back to his home in Norway. But the gods have other plans, and Thorgrim and his men wash up in the small Viking longphort of Vík-ló. Thinking themselves among friends, they soon learn that the opposite is true - that Grimarr Giant, the Lord of Vík-ló, has reason to want Thorgrim and his son, Harald, dead. In a world where they cannot tell friend from foe, a world of violence at sea and on land, Thorgrim, Harald, Ornolf, Starri, and their band of Norsemen find themselves once again fighting not just for plunder but for their very survival.

Excellent addition to the series.

I was a bit sceptical of this series when I began, but I'm so glad I took the leap. As the third instalment, I couldn't fault this book in any way. I'm very much looking forward to following the continued adventures of the saga.

Superb

Increasingly this author proves head and shoulders above his contemporaries.
The standard equals the classic writers and works and defies the apparent trend toward universal dumbing down. It's also a compelling and plausible story.

Dude sounds like he's whispering or something.

His accents sound good to my unsophisticated ear, but his reading of narration rather then dialogue has an odd rhythm that makes me impatient.

Five stars

Nelson has outdone himself with this one. He masterfully laid the foundation in the previous book for the drama in this one. The narration, as always, was superb.

Slower start, but picks up very well

Very thrilling once you get past all the seamanship details and story setup. As with the other books, there are multiple sides to every conflict.

as if the author was in that shield wall

loved the story - the twists are not superfluous but rather very logical - one of the most convincing sagas there is.
