The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
- By MrsFiddleback on 29-05-09
Summary
A compelling thriller introducing a driven young detective trying to prove herself in the LAPD.
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting.
Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night. As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job - no matter what the department throws at her.

Dreadful narrator
I imagine the story will be good but am only at chapter 14 so far as...
Struggling to cope with terrible narrator, who's breathless and dull voice is really so annoying. I'll have to finish book cos it's a Michael Connelly but won't listen again if same reader, ruining flow of story and my ability to concentrate.

I'm a huge fan of Michael Connolly and I have read every novel he has written. This is my first audible version of his work and it was absolutely terrible! The narrator was awful and it just didn't work. She had no "connection" and I struggled to get to the end.

Promising story line - irritating narrator
What would have made The Late Show better?
I had to give up on this book after 2 chapters. I could not bear the narrator's monotonous delivery- completely devoid of expression or attempt at character. Such a shame as I love Michael Connelly. I'll have to read the book instead.

No messing with this badass heroine.
The only thing I question is the narrator. She was obviously trying to channel the book's 'cool as' heroine but I found her delivery a tad too monotonous. Still really enjoyed Connelly's modern (on all levels) cop.

the usual Connelly brilliance.
Fear not Connelly fans, Michael has rebooted his detective trope with a new hero. IMHO!! He's always written women well in his books, and this is no different, with a believable, sympathetic, flawed character, sharing with all his hero's a determination to work for justice above all else.
Trust Connelly to write a female cop better than most female writers.... she seems to have a complex past, which we'll hopefully get to learn more about.
I've no idea if this is the start of a series, but I certainly hope so.... :)
Also, a big thumbs up for the subtle handling of a transgender character, how Ballard doggedly refers to the character as 'she', (the transgender character's choice of pronoun) whilst an uncaring system persists with 'he', despite years of gender realignment surgery. It's not made a big thing of, but kudos to Mr Connelly for getting this right!!

Please don't narrate anymore books!!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Great story, very boring narrator! Does the author have control over the narrator of their novels?? I couldn't tell whether it was a female or male narrator - which wasn't a big deal - but she sounded totally bored and it was often very difficult to distinguish between different characters.
Would you be willing to try another one of Katherine Moennig’s performances?

Great story but very poor reading
The story is great, as expected by Michael Connelly. Unfortunately the audio version is marred by truly awful reading. The cadence in the reader’s voice is a consistently short sequence of fast-up loud-down-softer, and is unrelated to the content or the intended syntax. The effect on listeners is like water torture.

The narrator murdered this audio version
Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or Katherine Moennig?
Let me say I LOVE Michael Connelly and I am a real Harry Bosch fan, but I could not
get in to the book at all due to the terrible vocal performance and the fast pace at which she spoke. I honestly felt giddy and sick trying to pay attention and concentrate.
I would ask the producers to take a look at the production, as it's possible the voice has been sped up or not "produced well" in the studio.
I am going to try the paper version, but would recommend you stay away from the audio version... or try a sample first.
Has The Late Show turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Boring, monotone voice, one of the worst vocal performances I've ever heard. Spoke way too quickly and had POOR enunciation.
Was The Late Show worth the listening time?
NO way. A complete waste.
Any additional comments?
The audio talent does not give justice to the magnificent Michael Connelly!

Wonderful
For Micheal Connelly fans this is a no- brainer. Just use your credit for it. This book is as good as any in the Harry Bouch series.
This is gripping thriller though it can get classified as a police procedural. It has all the twist and turns which keep surprising you. The sub plots ensure that there is not one single minute when you are not gripped by the narrative. Wow. it was an awesome ride!

Absolutely gripping story with loads of twists and turns, highly recommended. 'Excellent series launch ...
