Oxford students who can’t light a fire, Macho outdoorsy man. Bitchy women. Some fairly thin, tired caricatures here.

A bit wet

This is a SUPERB modern take on a murder who done it. A thrilling page turning read brought to life through superb characterisation and brilliant twists and turns in the plot. I couldn’t finish it quick enough.

Highly recommended... a brilliant book

i have to say this has been one of my most entertaining reads in 2018, it's an absolute cracking mystery. As some other reviewers have stated it is written very much in golden age of crime a la Christie and set in a country house (lodge). There are a group of long time friends who met at Oxford and are now in their thirties who spend each New Year together. Emma and Mark, Miranda and Julien, Samira and Giles alongside baby Priya (6 months old), gay couple Nick and Bo plus Katie are the friends plus 3 staff Dougie, Heather and Ian. As the story progress we learn about each character and the dark secrets they keep. The friends aren't the only paying guests at the lodge there is also two Icelanders named Invar and Gudrun.

A guest goes missing and a body is found but it isn't revealed till later on who is murdered. The suspense keeps building up until we learn who by whom in the last few chapters.

The action takes place during a snow blizzard and which leaves the lodge cut off and to try and travel in the freezing rural conditions would certainly be dangerous in its self! Never mind stay at a lodge where there's been a murder! The description of the Scottish landscape was a joy and I was totally immersed...so much so I could almost feel the snow beneath my feet as I walked the dog through the woods whilst listening!

This novel is excellent, although the main characters are really unlikable, it held my attention right through. The author managed to keep me guessing as to who was laying dead and why. The twists kept coming and coming. Each chapter is told from the POV of the main female characters and Dougie the gamekeeper which I really liked.

Any way this book is worth a credit of anybody's money and certainly a re read/listen.

There's been a murder!

I really enjoyed this unusual murder mystery. Written something like a modern day Agatha Christie novel, the characters are well drawn and great atmosphere is created with detailed descriptions of the winter landscape.

Modern who-done-it!

I happened to listen to this at exactly the time it's set, just after Christmas 2018, which helped in setting the scene. The plot is a bit daft but it's rolls along and is very well read, so definitely worth a credit.

Enjoyable And Well Read

Loved it. Very different from Lucy’s other books but a superb thriller with very interesting characters. I loved the way the characters were revealed bit by bit and how the victim wasn’t known until near the end. Well done Lucy and I look forward to your next book.

A great thriller

Yeah, great listen!
Found in the ‘cheapie’ section and thought ‘why no’?
Really pleased I got it as it kept me intrigued right to the very end.
Would recommend!
Narrators were really good and the story content was very engaging.

Loved it!

The story has multiple narrators and is a classic closed house situation - in this case weather bound in the HIghlands. Held my interest to the end and didnt spot the villain!

Worth a punt!!

Really good listen

A group of old university friends get together for their annual New Year’s Eve reunion which this year takes place in a remote and beautiful location in Scotland. During the book we learn of various fractures within the group and the eventual death of one of their number.

The story flits between present day when the body is discovered and the days leading up to the death. The story also considers the events from various different perspectives these include; the ground keeper, housekeeper and three guests.

I found the story interesting although I was slightly disappointed to realise that I had guessed correctly the identity of the body, the reasons behind the death and the killer about midway in the book. However there were some little extras within the plot which I had not seen coming which kept my interest.

I have read some other reviews of this book in which people had found it difficult to sympathise with the protagonists, finding them to be unlikable. I did not have this problem, instead I found them to be human. Yes they had some more unlikeable qualities but this, for me, made them more interesting and human. Although it is noted that in real life I probably would not be friends with them!

Overall I enjoyed the story and in particular the narration which I felt gave the plot and characters extra depth.

Enjoyable although a slightly predictable ending
