Why mess with a classic?

First thing to say is that the production values and performances are excellent, Stephen Fry is, well, Stephen Fry. Is that a criticism? Not sure, but he does seem to essentially play the same character whatever he is in. He does it very well though. Did I enjoy listening to the episodes - yes, undoubtedly.

BUT…what on earth were they thinking with the added scenes and added characters? I get that some adaptation is required for radio but whole new scenes were shoehorned into this, scenes that didn’t appear in the original. ‘Improving’ on Conan-Doyle?’ Er… I don’t think so.

Ditto characters, mainly the awful ‘wise woman’ of the moors. What the heck? She sounds like she’s come straight out of a Blackadder episode (“Two things must ye know about the Wise Woman. First that she is wise. Second, that she is…. A WOMAN!) Just cringe, cringe, cringe. What puzzles me is that Stephen Fry is a massive and very knowledgable Sherlock Holmes buff. Did he not think to intervene at any point?

All very odd. It would be great if there were more new adaptations of the Holmes stories. But there’s a reason the stories have never been out of print and that’s because Conan-Doyle was rather good at what he did. Please don’t try and improve on perfection.

Awful

when it's the original story it's pretty good but the new stuff they crowbarred in ruins a perfectly good story. Old mother Gree or whatever she is called is particularly bad, the fact they felt the need to add the 19th century version of an Anti-vaxxer is terrible, oh and they changed the ending, it sucks.

Don't Mess With a Classic!

Overall this was very enjoyable - the (original) story is of course excellent and the performances here are very good. But what I found to be irritating and unnecessary was the introduction of a new character - the Wise Old Woman - that was nonsense.

different but excellent MORE PLEASE

I know that a different interpretation of this story may not be to everyone's taste. however I found it atmospheric and exciting, I was gripped from the start to finnish. the production quality is excellent not too much sound effects but just enough to enhance the atmosphere . After listing to Mr Fry read the whole sherlockian cannon I was expecting him to portray Holmes, but was pleasantly surprised to hear him play Watson with a real warmth , placing Watson firmly at the heart of this story. Colin Salmon was excent too, as are all supporting cast simply one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. Please can we have more adaptations from this team.

Very Well Done

This isn't one of my favorite Sherlock Holmes stories, but they really brought it to life - it was very entertaining & very well done. I love radio dramas with a full cast and all the sound effects!

The traditional charm of Holmes and Watson

Sherlock Holmes, so very English. He has been updated to be more modern in the last few years, yet this adaption sees a return to his original roots. Mann and Scott do a fantastic job of writing this story with all the charm of the original, 'showing' us a side of England almost all but lost. The performances are exceptional, to be honest, what I've always come to expect from Stephen Fry. Along with the sound effects, all of this comes together to create a wonderful experience that completely absorbs you. I do hope they carry on making these Holmes adaptations!
