Summary

The third in the series of the classic fantasy tales – The Chronicles of Narnia. Read by the unforgettable Sir Michael Hordern.

“Where I come from, nearly all the animals talk,” said the Horse. “The happy land of Narnia.” His whinny sounded very like a sigh.

In The Horse and His Boy, Shasta, a boy on the verge of being sold into slavery, meets Bree, a talking horse who has been kidnapped from Narnia and longs to return there. Together they decide to run away in search of his beloved home. They flee on a wild and dangerous journey through strange cities, eerie tombs and harsh deserts – in search of Narnia, where there is freedom and safety.

Beautiful story, reading and music - magical

Micheal Hordern, a genius narrator, goes above and beyond for this Narnia series. Hordern's voices are brilliant, and he keeps the listener deeply engaged and involved. The harp and flute music is sublime, giving a sense of movement or of feeling, creating the scene powerfully and memorably. The combination of story, music and narrator is magical. All brilliantly done, I particularly like The Horse and His Boy from this series, it works particularly well.

Sublime nostalgia!

I had this exact recording on cassette when I was a wee girl. The cadences of the narration were once essential in helping me fall asleep — only Michael Hordern would do! I thought the music was enchanting, and especially loved the character of Aravis. So nice to have a digital copy now.

It’s an underrated book in the Narnia series, but I do think the representation of Calormen is a bit…problematic and sometimes it’s hard to ignore that in 2022.

Good storyline, poor execution

I love this story and have read it many times. Although the narrators voice is pleasant to listen to, I think the type of voice and story could have been better matched. the loud piercing music is also somewhat off putting. nonetheless, I enjoyed hearing the story again very much!
