About this listen

The unmissable conclusion to Tim Leach's critically acclaimed historical adventure series set in the Roman Empire.

180 AD. North of the Wall, Sarmatian warrior Kai and his adopted tribe, the Votadini, struggle for survival, cast into unfamiliar lands by Roman reprisals.

When news arrives that an old enemy is in charge of the Votadini's hated foes, a confederation of tribes known as the Painted People, and has roused them to action, Kai heads south towards the Wall, hoping to ally with the Romans against this resurgent threat.

Meanwhile, the Romans have heard tales of butchery and mayhem beyond the Wall. Lucius, Legate of the North, believes Kai and his allies who are responsible, and sends forth an expedition to capture his old comrade.

Can Kai and his loved ones survive the onslaught—or will the combined might of Rome and the hatred of their enemies spell the end for the warrior and his tribe?

The Hollow Throne is perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Adrian Goldsworthy.

Have listened to all three instalments of the trilogy on audible. Sad to come to the end, but very satisfying character progressions and arcs.
Love the mixing of landscape, known historical elements, myth and the authors (wild) imagination

Some phrases would make a great drinking game ‘like in the old stories…’ but the layered motifs give the stories their hypnotic and rythymic quality that I really enjoyed

Have listened to Tim Leeches earlier books about other eras in history too, think this set is my favourite so far.

Gripping and hypnotic, visceral and thoughtful

For me this story suffers from adjectival sclerosis and scenes of action that are hardly worth the wait. On top of that the author has a lamentable lack of knowledge about the Druids and also falls into the ‘Painted People’ trap created by Rosemary Sutcliffe in Eagle of the Ninth. Forgettable stuff.

Predictable and Long Winded
