Summary

From his favourite chair on the terrace above the ninth hole, The Oldest Member tells a series of hilarious golfing stories. From Evangeline, Bradbury Fisher's fifth wife and a notorious 'golfing giggler', to poor Rollo Podmarsh whose game was so unquestionably inept that 'he began to lose his appetite and would moan feebly at the sight of a poached egg', the game of golf, its players and their friends and enemies are here shown in all their comic glory. One of Wodehouse's funniest books, The Heart of Goof is a collection of peerlessly comic short stories.

Critic reviews

"Wodehouse is the funniest writer - that is, the most resourceful and unflagging deliverer of fun - that the human race, a glum crowd, has yet produced." (The New Yorker)

Golfing from a bygone era

PG Wodehouse at his best with endearing stories from a bygone era. Jonathan Cecil’s narration is engaging and keeps you listening.
A great addition for any PGW fans.

Another perfect pairing of Wodehouse and Cecil

Not one of my favourite Wodehouse books, but nonetheless entertaining. Jonathan Cecil sublime as usual.

A bit too good heavy?

While PG Wodehouse remains a brilliant writer, I found myself wearying of this set of golf based anecdotes. I think I prefer his longer stories. Having said that, I should add that there are some excellent comic moments in these stories.
