Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

So how many not-actually-dead characters now?
The first two books of this trilogy were unsubtly hinting that the plot of this one would happen.
It isn't like there was any sort of over-arcing plot to the three books that would normally be implied by the term "trilogy". This book is more like tying up a loose end that was deliberately left loose to be tied up here... and giving a bit more screen-time to Drizzt's evil-opposite nemesis for no better reason than just to give Drizzt more things to angst over than just the colour of his skin.
It is a generic chase-plot. More disposable characters come and go. RAS once again writes a ridiculously boring sequence of events so immediately explained that predictability doesn't even have to factor into it. I'm not even entirely sure what happened at the end because it was just so asinine by that point that I couldn't bring myself to care. A wedding or a big gay orgy or something. I don't know. If as much time was given to finishing up the plot adequately as to writing out crappy combat scenes, maybe this wouldn't be such a disaster.
At some level I do wonder if R.A.Salvatore ever learnt "show, don't tell" ... but I'm just not willing to give these awful books any more chances. I'm not willing to wade through any more terrible stories badly narrated in the hopes that they might get better. There are actual, genuinely good fantasy books out there I could be listening to instead of this atrocious tripe.

Victor Bevine should be fired
I absolutely love all of Salvatore's novels, particularly his Drizzt books, but please get rid of Victor Bevine. This guy is totally clueless when it comes to pronouncing the English language and his sultry voice cannot imitate anything remotely evil or tough sounding. To the editor for failing to catch all the incorrect pronunciations, look up "macabre", and OMG, every time I hear Bevine say "short lived" I literally scream out "it's LIVED you moron" , you should be fired for not doing your job... both of you took a great book and made it stupid because of your combined ignorance

lived is not a hard word to read in English and unless i pronounce it wrong myself it hurts to hear him read it so... but i love the books love the voices of the characters the the feel. that word alone is my only gripe for what is other wise a perfect book.

Icewind Dale Trilogy a winner
I enjoyed the Icewind Dale Trilogy, a story of the earliest days of Drizzt's existence above ground. I enjoyed watching the Companions develop their relationships. The story is fast paced, plenty of action. Victor Bevine did a good job of narrating.

Great ending to the trilogy! One narrator gripe :/
What did you love best about The Halfling's Gem?
The characters really make the story. The core characters and their interpersonal relationships, while questing in the Forgotten Realms, are just about classic fantasy now. Who doesn't like Drizzt?
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Halfling's Gem?
When the story was taken to one of the lesser planes. The description of another plane of existence was spot-on...very good.
Any additional comments?
The third installment of The Icewind Dale Trilogy was a fun listen, although standard fantasy storytelling - no Game of Thrones type political backstabbing or shady plots...it's great D&D. I rate both the story and the narrator together, so I had to bring it down a notch. The narrator has an aggravating way of whispering during most of the book. His voices and cadence were fine, I just wish he would speak in a normal tone.
