About this listen

'I've occasionally been asked why it is that I need to go for a drink before watching the Albion play. I've always answered with something lame, along the lines of, "You wanna try watching us sober" ...where does this urge come from? I've raced off to games hours early to give me a chance to drink a lot of beer in a relatively short time...the craic is good, usually. Sometimes it isn't, Occasionally it's all rather boring. But I always make the effort. Why? Well....'

The popular broadcaster and columnist sets out to discover the unsung pleasures of drinking in moderation.

The recommended alcohol limit is 14 units a week. Adrian Chiles used to put away almost 100. Ever since he was a teenager, drinking was his idea of a good time—and not just his, but seemingly the whole nation's. Still, it wasn't very good for him: the doctor made that clear. If you lined them up, Adrian must have knocked back three miles of drinks. How many of them had he genuinely wanted? A mile?

There's an awful lot of advice out there on how to quit booze completely. If you just want to drink a bit less, the pickings are slim. Yet while the alcohol industry depends on a minority of problem drinkers, the majority really do enjoy in moderation. What's their secret? Join the inimitable Chiles as he sets out around Britain and plumbs his only slightly fuzzy memories of a lifetime in pubs in a quest to find the good drinker within.

really good mentality, thank you worth while and not the idea of stopping completely which will never work for me

love the approach,

I listened to this book over the course of two or three days. A very easy listen that was well read.

I've listened to many sobriety books, many of which are a bit useless in that they claim to teach you a method of sobriety but then take forever actually telling you what to do, if at all.

This book is different in that it obviously doesn't preach sobriety as the only solution. Although Adrian does say that for some it may be the only solution, but for many thereay be an alternative to giving up the booze completely.

Thos might be a risky approach depending on your level of alcohol dependency/love, so approach it with caution.

Still, a good book and a different way to look at things. Recommend.

Worth. a listen if you want to try an alternative

I have finished this in just over a day following a recommendation. I have got to make changes to my drinking habits and feel there’s some great strategies in here for me to do so. I love how honest Chiles is, I am so glad there is someone that thinks and feels like me when it comes to cutting back. I’m really hoping this drives me to a better place.
Thank you Adrian!

Honest & relatable

Focuses on the good the bad and the ugly of drinking. Very informative and non judgemental in describing his opinion of drinking.

Very informative

A breath of fresh air amongst the hoards of quit lit books that suggest total abstinence is the only option and moderation pointless and impossible. I also loved listening to the memoir side of the book. A good read

Loved this book
