Summary

Western medicine has not been particularly successful at getting people relief from conditions like depression, chronic pain, migraine headaches, addiction, and PTSD. Dr. Tafur helps us to understand why.

I have watched people spend years in frustration and thousands of dollars consulting an army of specialists, without getting real relief from their problem. Because these and others are diseases deeply connected with the state of our emotional bodies. Too often, the Western medical approach fails to address the emotional dimension of illness. This is where traditional plant medicines, with their ability to alter consciousness and open channels of communication to our emotions, offer so much promise.

The stories shared here demonstrate the astonishing - mystical, colorful, metaphysical - effects of ayahuasca and traditional Amazonian plant medicine. Follow Dr. Tafur through the Amazon jungle as he develops a breakthrough understanding of how psychoactive plants interact with the complex network that connects our minds and hearts to our physical anatomy. What Dr. Tafur presents here is nothing short of a paradigm shift for modern medicine, where sacred plants, used properly in ceremony, take their place as important tools in the doctor’s medicine chest, offering the missing elements of emotional and spiritual healing that have eluded us for so long.

Essential knowledge for our times

I have read a few other books and seen a handful of documentaries on Ayahuasca, and this give a clear view of the full tradition of this important longstanding traditional healing modality of which Ayahuasca is a part. This is clear in the title that it is about the healing heritage of the Amazon plant medicine which incorporates dietary practices and many herbs beyond Ayahuasca as an integral part of this healing process, and, from my reading, best not separated from the Ayahuasca ceremonies if a person wants an optimal healing experience. That said, the case studies he depicts in the book range from no incorporation of the master plants or diet to several months using the traditional diet and herbs with ceremony. In all the case studies he accounts, benefits of life changing proportions occur to varying degrees. I have not yet experienced any part of this particular healing modality, and have been give the the best understanding of the Amasonian healing tradition to date, from this book. I will say a big thank you to Dr. Tafur for writing his account.

I am not sure if it was he or Luis Robledo who read the book as they are both cited as readers, but I would suggest a professional reader with more ability to express emotional nuance through their voice as the current reader was rather flat and monotone. I however also think that that reader should definitely have experience with this Amazonian plant medicine tradition to give it the backing of life experience that Tafur has. My feeling is, if readers understand the material they are imparting to others, they will be more effective in imparting the information. However I would not deter anyone from reading this book as it is.

Over all, regardless of the reader, the information is very engaging once you get through the preliminary foundational chapters and describes a powerful means to heal ourselves and our planet one person at a time. I think the plants, which I will call "gates" for now, such as "psyllocibin mushrooms, ayahuasca, sound vibrational healing, and others, and the traditions and healers that respect and utilize their wisdom, are gratefully coming to the forefront in our time of need as a global culture that in many ways is in dis-ease. May many more people open to the possibilities that this and other "gate" modalities have to offer.

A more holistic approach to modern medicine

This is a life-changing book that gives hope to anyone who has ever felt far away from themselves, and needed help beyond what western medicine could offer. Beyond just illustrating ayahuasca's mind-blowing healing potential (which is done very well), the author proposes the possibility that a person can be reconnected with their inherent wholeness, in spite of any past or current experiences they might struggle with. This book incorporates medical research and the wisdom of indigenous cultures to support the vital need we have in our society for spiritual healing, in a way that is grounded and rational.

case studies of Ayahuasca healing

Informative text of the diverse benefits of ayahuasca, case by case. NOT amazonian medicine broadly.

New to plant medicine, this is a safe sane book

You're going to get good rounded pros and cons. I'm speaking from real world experience. Finally a practitioner writing a book instead of a "WRITER". I'm tired of WRITERS posing as experts. If you don't love it, you're in need of plant medicine and living too much in your sickness. Good job Joseph Tafur, thank you for the good work you do.
