Gripping!

One of the best of Mark Edwards books. Absolutely fantastic, so many twists and turns. Loved how part of it was set in Brighton as I used to live there!

The Devil's Work

I was first introduced to author Mark Edwards' work via Audible and as a result, have enjoyed listening to his various titles. This, his latest release, was a crushing disappointment. Why? well, it was all an overstuffed gothic- horror-meets-workplace-from-hell mishmash and the plot was pretty hyperbolic and downright silly at times. I didn't return it though, as I would for other titles, so it must have gripped me somewhat.

The narrator's rendition of the main character, Sophie's, black country accent was really quite awful; it sounded like somebody doing a really bad impression. That said, the rest of her characters were impressive, hence the 3* rating.

Oh dear, I do feel somewhat unable to recommended this title. As a person with Asperger Syndrome I was also a bit peeved to hear the condition used as an excuse for one of the character's personality flaws.

Gripping stuff

Enjoyed this audio book - it's the first one I've listened to by Mark Edwards though I've read all his others so I knew to expect something gripping and psychological. I didn't think the plot was quite as clever as some of his others as a lot of loose ends needed to be explained by the policeman at the end, however still a really good story from someone with a dark and clever imagination. Great narration - she did all the accents really well.

Dreadful narration

I was really looking forward to listening to this book as I have read all the others by this author. The story was great but I struggled to finish it as the narrator was terrible. Dreadful accents which really spoiled the story for me.

Good but not as good as his other books

I enjoyed this but it is not as good as Mark's other works such as Because She Loves Me or Magpies. The supposed Black Country accent is awful and ranges from Scouse to mock Birmingham, being a Black Country girl myself I know this is not how we talk. I don't think there is much need for an accent in this narration.
I liked the pace of the story and how it was told in the present day and with flashbacks.

Not great story. Not great narration. Sorry

The story is predictable at times, unexciting most of the rest of the time. I'm afraid the narrator didn't do it for me either.

Chilling and thrilling

This.book had me hooked from start to finish. I liked all the twists in the story and the two paralell.narratives. The.narrator was good although her voice was at times annoying. I recommend this.book to lovers of thrillers.

The leads accent was off putting

A rather silly story that felt very ‘thriller by numbers’ the narrators attempt at Sophie’s Wolverhampton accent was laughable. Supposed to have traces of Wolverhampton... it started off as Liverpudlian and then a full on Brummie accent that got stronger and stronger... as if anyone would have their local accent after apparently living in london for all those years. I found the story was drawn out and the ‘heroine’ so unlikeable and stupid you really didn’t care what happened to her.

Not very exciting

I thought this book would be a page turner. I found the characters so hard to get into. They where literally quite boring. No suspense or excitement. Very dull ending. I actually fell asleep several times while listening to this.

Grand story

Did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. At one point I almost retuned this book because I hate people who make stupid choices. But as the story went on Sophie's character developed more and I found I did not want to put the book down. The end is a bit predictable with a twist. Worth reading

Love his books. Keep you on your toes and guessing throughout the whole book. I am in the process of reading all his books. So far doesn't disappoint!

A huge fan of Mark Edwards but not this book.

I got 6 hours in and just couldn't finish. I am such a fan of Mark Edwards so I am shocked that I disliked this book so much. Can not connect with any of the characters or the narrator. Just not for me, sadly.

I liked it but...

I'll preface this by saying that I really enjoy thriller/ghost/paranormal anything and am rather easily entertained so the story was actually quite good, however the part I can't get over is the author's incredibly annoying female characters. This is particularly disappointing as the main character is a female. They (referring to this and the other book I've read from him- Follow You Home) make unrealistic decisions and come off as paranoid shrews/crazy ladies. I get some women are like that, but the women in these books just aren't believable and make me really dislike the main characters. I let it go with Follow You Home because the main female character in that book is actually not a good person at all, but in this case it just ruined the whole story for me. Some of the plot twists I definitely didn't see coming, but I probably won't read or listen to anymore of Mr. Edwards works based off of his poorly written characters. I'm pretty bummed about it because the plots in both of these books are very well done- I just can't abide the narrative.

okay book

The story itself is okay, I couldn't handle the accent of the narrator; perhaps I would have enjoyed it more with a different narrator.

Guilty pleasure

One cliche after another , unbelievable (and stupid) characters, but I couldn't stop listening. so I'm not sure how to review it other than to call it a guilty pleasure.
