I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for an honest review.This was much better than book 1!!!! It was paced well, and the plot fit with the pacing. The characters were well written and the narration was amazing! The narrator really separated voices for each character and it felt like each character had their own "voice" within the story. It was a great book. Well worth the read!

Perhaps because this is a sequel and I had not read the preceding book, I found it disjointed initially and was probably a third into the story before it began to fall into place and the person I had expected to be the main focus became, instead, merely an also ran. This was also complicated, I feel, by the fast narration especially in these earlier stages. Overall, Nicholas Pattrella gave a reasonable reading, good and slick as befitted the text, with clearly defined character dialogue. But he seemed over enthusiastic to give a performance, becoming sometimes distracting with the enthusiasm of catching the intensity of exclamations. Some of his pronunciations were a little strange, as well.His machine gun speed left me wondering if he had been on a time limit.The story was interesting, but it was the atmospheric feeling of New Orleans which was, for this listener, the main pleasure of this book: not the voodoo component itself but the undertones running through it. The main protagonist was interesting with great potential for future stories, but the author would have been better employed building on his character than introducing various other less important players. But then again, this could be because I am unfamiliar with book one. Although a stand alone novel, this book would probably be far more enjoyable with knowledge of the first.
I was given The Devil's Serum as a gift from the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks for that. I hope that there will be a third in this series about Detective Byone, again set against the New Orleans background. If there is, I will certainly want to hear it as, despite my comments above, this was an enjoyable listen which for me simply failed to reach it's full potential.
