About this listen
This is a follow-up to The Devil's Serum. In the astonishing finale of the Alexis Beaureparie series, Moses, Armond, and Lisette once again come face to face with the alluring, sinister Alexis Beaureparie and her evil plans to have them finished once and for all. With the help of her murderous lover, will she succeed in killing the detective or will she be undone?

I enjoyed, but was not over excited, by the two earlier Byone mysteries, possibly because I read them in reverse order. But with this, the third in the series, I am fully on board. The pleasure comes in reuniting with old acquaintances from the earlier books, especially the delicious antiques dealer, Armand. The story itself is slightly unusual and, although this could be read as a standalone, so much would be lost from not knowing the background information about, not only the characters, but what has happened to them before.Nicholas Patrella again narrates: no easy job with so many place names and phrases which are in languages other than English as well as various accents to perform. He does an excellent job, given the difficulties, reading these all fluently, with conviction, although sometimes the accents might just be a little suspect. His character dialogues are good, too, with clear definition between individuals. But in the text reading, he has a hesitancy, brief but noticeable gaps between words where none is needed, which mars this otherwise good performance.
My thanks to the rights holder for gifting me my copy of the Cemetery Paintings, via Audiobook Boom. The characters are delightful, the settings very different from those I am used to and the story isn't bad, either. Altogether, unusual and, at times, heartbreakingly beautiful despite the seedy circumstances. Recommended - but read the first two books first ( or at least book one).

This was the third novel in the Detective Byone series and it delivers! While not a great fan of book 1, book 2 and 3 have been getting better and better! It was fast paced and entertaining and I didn't want to put it down (I did pause in the middle so I could watch Big Brother but I listened during the breaks and picked it up again straight away). Ricardo M. Fleshman knows how to write a brilliant book and Nicholas Patrella just has a way of narrating these characters and bringing them to life.
