Summary

Peter V. Brett, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Demon Cycle, begins an epic fantasy adventure set in his beloved world, following a new generation of heroes.

Fifteen years have passed since the demons were destroyed. Heroes have become legend, and those that remain live in their shadows.

Olive, Princess of Hollow, has her entire life planned out—a steady march toward succession. But the more her mother writes the script, the more Olive rails against playing the parts she is assigned.

Darin is the son of the man people say saved the world. Everyone expects greatness from Darin, but the only thing he’s ever been great at is hiding.

But now it’s time to fight the darkness.

When Olive and Darin step across the wards one night, they learn that the demons are not all gone, and those that remain hunger for revenge.

Are Darin and Olive ready to be heroes?

Critic reviews

‘Epic in scale and emotionally intimate, it delivers immaculate world-building, complex politics – both sexual and social, and propulsive, edge-of-the-seat plotting. Settle down for a feast of turns, twists, [and] magic.’ Daily Mail

The Desert Prince is a deeply intimate, yet epic adventure. Heart-wrenching, smart, and modern, this book kept me wide-eyed and wide awake for many-a-nights as I struggled step-for-step alongside Olive and Darin from the green lands to the desert pits to the darkest recesses of the demon minds. The Desert Prince has set a new standard for fantasy.’ Wesley Chu, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the War Arts Saga

‘An intricately crafted tale of intrigue and courage where one’s station and lineage determines everything, good and bad... Peter Brett has outdone himself with this first book in a new series.’ #1 New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks

Beautiful.

Peter v Brett has done it again, perfectly written and a great follow up saga. I do miss Colin Mace as the narrator though.

character voices spoiled it

The original series is one of my favourite series of audio books. The fantasy story line in them is great and the characters were really brought to life.

When I saw a new book was being released, I was really excited to delve back into this fantasy world, but after listening to the first couple of hours, I was really disappointed.

The character voices are completely wrong. The characters who originate from Tibbets Brook have gone from an almost west country in England accent to a Southern American accent.

I dont think the voice acting is bad in this audio book, it's just completely jarring for me as a returning fan of the series.

amazing story but poor narration

Demon Cycle is my favourite series. The narration was amazing and brought all the characters to life.
I held off on The Desert Prince for a long time as Colin Mace is not doing the narration. But then Peter V Brett said the book was being recorded again with new narrators, so I gave it a chance.

The story is amazing, and does the Demon Cycle justice. But the narration is annoying. I can gey used to the characters sounding different from the original series. But the pronunciation is dreadful, especially the krasian words. It makes for a difficult listen at times. I hope Peter V Brett didn't sit in on this recording because it has ruined the book.

if you didn't listen to the Demon Cycle and this is your first taste of this fantasy world, you will love the story and the narration won't bother you. If you're here because you loved the Demon Cycle you will most likely leave disappointed.

Not the Demon Cycle but still a really great and enjoyable book.

This book is so well written its a joy to listen too. The female narrator is brilliant and though the male narrator does a really good job, his strong accent takes some time to get used to. It does not quite live up to the Demon Cycle but still well worth a listen.

absolutely fantastic

Absolutely fantastic, but if you haven't: go read the demon cycle first, starting with The Painted Man.

performance uses somewhat different accents than the first series, but once I got used to that I appreciated the skill and effort that had gone into it.

great work Peter V. Brett, and to all involved!

Character development

Time and time again I am blown away by Peter V. Brett's books. This one is no different, the magic in these books is Mr Brett's ability to bring characters to life in a way that you feel you know them as beloved friends or hated enemies. Fantastic from start to end with no lull un between. Well done sir.

Not Demon Cycle

Honestly, I suspect it wasn’t Peter V. Brett that wrote this book at all. It’s too inconsistent, internally and with the mythos built up in the previous series.

The biggest mistake, and it boggles my mind that it happened, is how a prophecy read out of dice had a very specific twist that only makes sense in English. The dice don’t have English words written on their sides, so this doesn’t make any sense. Even if they did, it would be very weird for an experienced dice reader mistake princes with princesses. It’s like an AI generated the story without any regard for logic.

There are smaller blunders as well, but I’ll just mention that the personalities of the characters are very different when told by one narrator or another. Maybe this is intentional, but it’s jarring.

Story-wise, the plot is totally predictable without any unexpected turns, and is disappointingly cliched. Of course all the young characters are living under the long shadow of their parents, robbed of their freedom to be themselves, because how else can they have an excuse to be whiny about it? Of course the adults had all to disappear unexplainably so that the teens could shine. Argh, the thing I liked the most about The Demon Cycle was how it challenged some storytelling conventions, but seems that now that Peter V. Brett gained some fame all he cares about is milking it with easy young adult formulas.

Narration still not great.

The story is great, but its like the narrators never bothered to listen to The Demon cycle narrated by Colin Mace. People have a certain expectation of how words should be pronounced and what accents should be used for the different races and these new narrators made the same mistake as the previous ones for this book. They aren't as bad as before but still not good.

Good Story with Awful Narration

Sadly the narration was a huge let down. The southern American drawl didn't reflect the characters compared to the demon cycle. I did start to wonder if it was their first time reading words outlook.
