About this listen

Remember those people that destroyed the economy and then cruised off on their yachts? Well guess what? Someone is killing them.

Dublin is in the middle of a heat wave, and tempers are running high. The Celtic Tiger is well and truly dead, activists have taken over the headquarters of a failed bank, the trial of three unscrupulous property developers teeters on the brink of collapse, and in the midst of all this, along comes a mysterious organisation hell-bent on exacting bloody vengeance in the name of the little guy.

Paul Mulchrone doesn’t care about any of this; he has problems of his own. His newly established detective agency is about to be DOA. One of his partners won’t talk to him for very good reasons, and the other has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth for no reason at all. Can he hold it together long enough to figure out what Bunny McGarry’s colourful past has to do with his present absence?

When the law and justice no longer mean the same thing, on which side will you stand?

The Day That Never Comes is the second book in Caimh McDonnell’s Dublin Trilogy, which melds fast-paced action with a distinctly Irish acerbic wit.

I read the first book in this series and loved it but thought it could only be improved by being able to hear the accents. I was so pleased when i found out they were available on audible and wasn't disappointed. The story is as good as the first and the performance was great, I snorted with laughter at several points. Long live Bunny Mcgarry, I hope there are many more to come

great story, wonderful narration

Been hooked on the books since the summer. Working my way through The Dublin and McGarry Stateside series on audible - this is one of my favourites, darker than some. Caimh McDonnell has created an alternate universe, rather like the late lamented Terry Pratchett, where while bad stuff still happens, the really bad guys satisfyingly tend to get their comeuppance, at the hands of the most unlikely of avenging angels, an overweight, heavy-drinking, hurley-mad, wonky-eyed man from Cork and a cast of other, equally loveable misfits. I don’t think I’ve ever “read” so many books by an author solely in audiobook form, but Morgan C Jones narration is so brilliant, it definitely adds a dimension to the ultra-sharp writing. For the non-Irish who wouldn’t have known a Cork accent if it bit them on the bum, Bunny’s delivery, as voiced in the audiobooks, really brings the lines to life. No longer need to cast around for something to spend my audible credits on - I’m hoping Mr McDonnell’s impressive rate of quality writing (the man is a machine) and audio book conversion can keep up. Check out his website if you enjoy this - there’s a newsletter, free short stories in audio and written form and a couple of great podcasts. Keep me going between my monthly Bunny fix. I know I could buy an extra credit but I’m trying to eke them out, will be slight bereft when I finish the series - never mind I can start on the C K McDonnell Stranger Times books. Satisfying, funny and strangely comforting reads for our uncertain times.

Brilliant, dark in places but laugh out loud funny.

These books are brilliantly written and funny. The narrator brings the characters to life in a way you wouldn’t get through reading it yourself. Just downloading the next one

Brilliantly funny

This was quite enjoyable but not as much as the first in the trilogy. Still loads of dark laugh out loud humour but I found that the story rambled a bit more than I’d have liked. Same central characters - developing relationships.
Much more political with echoes to current happenings.
Excellent narration once more from Morgan C Jones. The man is a genius!
