Summary

In 1842, two sisters drunkenly debate their future, their family chocolate business has failed and so they decide to open a séance parlour. The locals are shocked but soon their shop is crammed with people wanting to contact the dead.

Despite their change in fortune, a rift forms between the sisters, as young sister Judy gets her novel published, finds a man and proves to be more capable of contacting spirits than Maggie. Spurred on by jealousy, Maggie tries harder, and soon even the Queen is consulting her. The Church decides they must be stopped by any means possible, but these women will not go down without a fight.

Listening pleasure

I found it difficult to take my headphones off. Matthew Mullane does an amazing narration of Alan Williams's novel. Alan's story weaves it's way through Blackheath and the characters are brought to life by Matt in a special way. Recommend wholeheartedly by me

this lengthy book encapsulates two genre's of horror. well explained full story altogether I do feel the parallel story could have made two books.

A fantastical listen

A great audio book. Laugh out loud moments, romantic, scary, weepy, a really good listen. The narrator has a wide variety of voices and coupled with the sound effects he keeps you hooked into the story.

Well worth a listen.

Great story & characters.

Where does The Blackheath Seance Parlour rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 20 but that's because I love the book so much.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Blackheath Seance Parlour?

Don't want to give anything away.

Have you listened to any of Matthew Mullane’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Nope haven't listened to him before but he was good.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book makes you care about the characters and the journey.

Any additional comments?

I would of liked a woman narrating the story because of the female leads.

Beautiful, rich and engaging.

I found the setting of the scene to be engaging with each character develop and change, I felt invested in their journey. The sub plots and lavish detail made it both challenging and enjoyable. Details that must have been meticulously researched and story’s that played out in full, made me want to come back to it until the end.

The use of language and terminology were stunningly vivid and brought each characters personality out and made each situation seem so real. Such a descriptive and detailed account of the sisters story, journey and bond was mesmerising.

I though the genre was a little odd at first but I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it and the ending made me burst out laughing with surprise. Please read/listen to this book and enjoy it as much as I did.

Brilliant and genius

When people say “you must read ......” I ignore them, don’t ignore me when i say it though. Possibly one of my most favourite books ever.

Deliciously Quirky

If you could sum up The Blackheath Seance Parlour in three words, what would they be?

Quirky
Funny
Sad

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Blackheath Seance Parlour?

The grand hall performance

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The novel within a novel - inter-spaced throughout the book

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

really entertained, didn't make me cry or laugh out loud, more subtle feelings of empathy and sadness and happiness

Any additional comments?

Dark, very quirky, funny and brilliant - I was intrigued to read this when a friend described it as bonkers - it is!

I listened to this on audible and loved the narration, I'm still a bit awkward with audio books as I don't seem to concentrate as much as when actually reading, particularly as I listen only when dog walking, cooking etc, but this one really held my attention.

This is a really clever novel set in Victorian England with extremely quirky characters, lots of different back stories and the added bonus of a novel within a novel - thoroughly entertaining - a very different, funny, sad, spooky and wonderfully told story!

Highly recommended 4.5 - 5 stars

Loved It

I really enjoyed this book. The fantasy is frighteningly believable, as if you were there at that time, amongst the characters who are so brilliantly voiced. Couldn't wait to get to the end.. for the right reasons..
