Summary

It's not easy being a rebel. So many new skills to assimilate. Never mind strategic planning, weapons expertise and the like - there's bicycle stealing, oil-stain removal and boat steering to be mastered first. And quickly.

It's the time of the Civil Uprisings, and two young women set out to make a difference. Their only problem? They don't know where they are. Or where they're going. Or what to do when they get there. Other than that...

Fans of St Mary's will enjoy this glimpse into the past of some of their favourite characters.

Very moving

Jodi's descriptions are always great but this time I felt like I was really there.

It's not your usually time travelling romp but that's ok because it tells us more about some of our favourite characters.

Also I wasn't crying at the end I had something in my eye.

So make a pot of tea get the chocolate digestives open and enjoy.

The Past in the Present

The back story of The Battersea Barricades. Sometimes funny, sometimes odd and sometimes sad.

Beautifully and tightly crafted short story.

Yes, I cried.

Jodi does it again!

Absolutely perfect, I personally believe the best of the short stories in the Chronicles of St Mary’s canon.
Zara as always brings the words to life and drags you into the emotions the characters are feeling.
Get yourself a cup of tea, a packet of biscuits and settle in for a wonderful story of 3 women’s fight for freedom.

Another epic short story

If you are a fan of the saint Mary’s chronicles, you’ll love this background tale as much as any of the others. It’s another excellent tale from Jodi Taylor, with the fantastic Zara narrating.

I really enjoyed hearing about those unsung heroes and what really happened during the recent history of their England.

The only problem is waiting for the next one!

Wow! "Enough is enough"

I expected to greatly enjoy the glimpse into the bad ass background of 2 or 3 of St. Mary's strong women, and I especially expected to enjoy more detail surrounding the "civil unrest" that has been mentioned throughout the series, but this short story is so much more than its entertaining parts. The "little people doing what they can" story builds and builds until it ends on such a highly emotional note, both for the women during the battle and the women reflecting on the anniversary. They're fictional women, who fought a in a fictional civil war, but I still feel like I should toast in their honor seeing as they moved me to tears. And overarching everything is the timely message: Enough is enough, have the hard conversations and do the hard things now, before it comes to violence against your own brethren.

I would however like to complain to Audible re: their refusal to have the author's introduction narrated and included, on this story and previous series installments. The author has written something she clearly wants her readers to see, and just because this format is audio, it does not mean listeners are not interested in the author's *entire* story. Please include introductions going forward.

just what the series needed

finally, a background story that explains the world that the series lives in. it shows the history behind the series through the reminiscing of three exceptional women.

civil war with human dimensions

This isn't a crash-bang shoot-'em-up adventure, but a heartfelt look at ordinary people in the horrific confusion of civil strife, as seen in hindsight from the comfort of safety and friends. In this context, it's absolutely lovely and satisfying. If you're looking for less nuance and more simplistic good guy/bad guy storyline, this one isn't going to work, but as a change of pace with a thoughtful center, it's a delight.

Here we learn more of future history<br />

In this short story, we learn about the big civil uprising that is so much a part of The Chronicles Of St. Mary's. No time travel here, or whatever you choose to call it. The ladies of St. Mary's simply tell the story of their time in the resistance. It's a darn good story too, and told in such a way that brings up wellsprings of emotion. A darn fine trick considering that it's based of fictional events in a fictional war, fought by fictional charcters. It still moved me.

This not just a good St. Mary's story, it is a good story period.

Recommended strongly.

The History of the Ladies of the Rebellion

Jodi Taylor again delivers a funny, touching, educational addition to the St. Mary's saga in the story The Battersea Barricades. It was interesting to hear the history of the civil war that has been hinted at in the past books, and to have the delightful heroes of the Barricades tell the story made it that much more touching. This was a great way to celebrate St. George's Day. Even though it seems St. George wasn't British.

Zara Ramm once again proves that she is one of the best narrators on Audible.

Disappointing

Odd choice to tell the story filtered through a story. It should have been first person of one of the women. I also would have liked more explanation of the reasons for the conflict. The actual battle was underwhelming. The death was thrown in with no prior mention of the character.
