Summary

In The Accidental Soberista, Kate chronicles her journey and shares the wonderful gift she feels she has been given. Could it be that ditching the booze might not be a chore or a loss? Could it, in fact, be the best decision you will ever make for yourself and your life?

There wasn't one major reason that Kate Gunn decided to give up alcohol, more a few minor ones. She had an inkling that alcohol was holding her back from getting on top of her life. Plus the hangovers were getting worse. No longer just a dull headache throughout the day. At the worst times, entire weekends wiped out by one fun night she could hardly remember.

Kate was a social drinker, usually having a few (or more) drinks three nights in any week. She loved red wine by the fire and cold beers in the sunshine. She couldn't possibly imagine actually going ‘out out’ and not drinking. Like many people in Ireland, she had been drinking pretty much since she was 16 years old. Alcohol was part of life.

But not long into her alcohol-free journey, Kate discovered that breaking free from alcohol improved every single aspect of her life - from relationships to health to work to happiness. She’s been to gigs, festivals, dinners, nights out and parties - and had fun at all of them. Plus she actually remembered them! Best of both worlds.

I loved this 🥰 More than the other 10 “Quit Lit” books I’ve inhaled recently!

This was really quite a joy to listen to. The writers previous depth of attachment to alcohol is palpable and extremely relatable… this combined with the pleasure, peace and happiness she has since drawn out of life radiating from her words… make this book an exceptionally compelling listen and an uplifting motivator to continue my own new Soberista baby-steps! Thanks Kate for sharing your experiences (both before and since drink) so openly and colourfully and thanks Caroline for an absorbing, warming narration… I could honestly listen to you narrate the phone book!! 💕

Eye Opening

I enjoyed this book very much. Has made me look at my own habitual drinking and make some positive changes. Definitely worth a read. It is not preachy but just states facts and scenarios about Kates experience with alcohol .

Highly recommend

I have just finished this inspiring book. Honestly I am not a big reader ! Wish I was, but never enough hours or I start the first page and my eyes close from pure exhaustion and I have to start again the next day. So I decided to listen to this book on audible. Well I couldn’t put it down ! I have laughed out loud and cried !! I feel like you are literally talking to me! I can relate to everything you have said. I am truly inspired and want to thank you for your honest account of drinking and the journey on giving it up.. Amazing. Inspiring and highly recommend.

Thank you Kate Gunn for helping me join the soberista movement!!

This was an engaging insight into a “normal” women’s struggle with choosing not to drink. I identified with her relationship to alcohol. She touches on how we don’t as a society even question our unhealthy attitude to alcohol believing it’s the norm and what you do as a teenager being the right if passage into adulthood and continuing to drink on almost every occasion. I have read quite a few books of women choosing sobriety but found that those writers really did have a “drinking problem” and I couldn’t identify as much with that.
This book has only confirmed that I do not need alcohol and life will be better without it. I am excited now to embrace my soberista life and am now not ashamed to admit it to anyone. A weight has been lifted off my shoulders! This book has helped me greatly to reach this point. Thank you Kate!!

The accidental soberista

Such a great book, full of advice if you fancy cutting down on alcohol or a reminder why taking a break from alcohol is not about what you miss it’s about what you gain.
