About this listen
In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney where criminality thrives. We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors. Then comes her involvement in her first murder case. No one witnessed the savage beating of a tragic young girl who, the post-mortem reveals, was pregnant when she died. The murder enquiry is soon running cold...
And that makes the book more than just a mystery crime story.

Would you listen to Tennison again? Why?
It was really interesting to see how Tennison, as a young woman, had to battle her way determinedly through a sexist, institutionalised boys club to shine through as a worthy policewoman. That, along with having to deal with parents who categorically feel that she should have a nice, safe job before settling down and getting herself a husband meant that she had the support of just a handful of colleagues who recognised her potential; a potential that despite being surrounded by doubters, is always present. What aspect of Julie Teal’s performance might you have changed?
Julie Teal gave a solid performance, apart from some dodgy accents at times.Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
You do feel emotionally engaged and empathetic towards Jane as, having gotten to know her through Prime Suspect when she is a fully-fledged DCI who has seen all sorts of tragedy, you forget that she was once a young woman who was emotionally immature.Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to listen to and the characters were engaging people who you felt able to care about.Humble beginnings for a future great detective.
