This book is sooooo gripping. I loved Cabinet of Curiosities and because Special Agent Pendergast was in this book too, I decided to download it. I wasn't disappointed - it was even better than Cabinet of Curiosities and that's saying something! I am now firmly in love with Agent Pendergast and just itching for more. He's such a weird and fascinating character!

The atmospheric music was brilliant, and the ending was especially satisfying - I never saw it coming. Rene Auberjonois (the narrator) is especially good - able to create separate voices for each character in an exceptionally talented way. Just close your eyes and he will transport you to the scary corn fields. This book has one of the best openings I have ever heard. It gripped me from the start and I couldn't stop listening.

I have downloaded lots of books from Audible and this one will go down as one of my all time favourites. A ripping yarn, scary, atmospheric, gripping and delicious.

Special agent Pendergast is cool!

I liked the book itself, but the frequent background music pretty much ruined it for me. Lincoln & Child have got enough talent to create atmosphere with their writing alone, so there is certainly no need for "mood music".
If anything, it threatened to distract from the rythm of the writing and was frequently very, very irritating. While I love audio books, in this case, I'd definitely recommend the paper version.

good book - shame about the presentation

Pendergast is fantastic as always. The story is well crafted, with dribs and drabs of the why sowed in, but it’s not until the very end that you really UNDERSTAND why the events took place. I love stories like this, slightly supernatural seeming (some actually supernatural, some not) mystery, crime, or event and people delving into what is going on. I think this is my third or fourth Pendergast novel and it will absolutely not be my last, though I’m trying to only listen to one every now and then to spin them out and make them last longer!

I had to take a star off the overall rating for the random “mood music” (stole that phrase shamelessly from another reviewer because it’s perfect for what they’re trying to do for the story). There was only one moment where the background noise seemed appropriate, where Pendergast was sinking into his mind, but the rest were completely unnecessary. It did throw me out of the story a few times, but not enough to really spoil it.

Rene Obergonois is a very good narrator. I’ve seen him as an actor before but never heard him narrate until now. He brought a lot to the story. I’m wary of new to me narrators as they can really make or break a story. He made this one. Any books I see narrated by him in the future will be very much welcome!

Overall, this is a great book and well worth a listen if you enjoy the genre.

Brilliantly creepy

I did not like that this is the abridged version. It sucks. THERE is a lot missing. Don't bother buying this. I want my money back.

this is not the complete book
