Story
War rages across Europe. France is under the Nazi thumb. Britain has its back to the wall. In London, Scotland Yard detective Merlin investigates a series of disturbing events - a young girl killed in a botched abortion, a French emigre shot in a seedy Notting Hill flat, a mysterious letter written by a British officer gunned down in Crete. Story
Leaning on the banisters, Madame Maigret watched her husband going heavily downstairs.... What the newspapers didn't know was how much energy he put into trying to understand, how much he concentrated during certain investigations. It was as if he identified with the people he was hunting and suffered the same torments as they did.

Story
September 1940 is finally drawing to a close. With London having endured the Blitz for nearly a month, people are calling for vengeance: Britain should retaliate even harder with their own bombing campaign in enemy territory. But once again the night heralds more destruction. At Custom House, anxious residents dutifully head to the nearest public air-raid shelter as the warning siren wails. When dawn brings the all-clear people disperse, but one man remains - he's dead, stabbed through the heart.

An English bobbie returning from night patrol finds a corpse in evening dress locked in the stocks on the village green. He identifies the body immediately. Andrew Vereker was not a well-loved man, and narrowing down the suspects is not going to be an easy job. The Vereker family are corrupt and eccentric - and hardly cooperative. It's another case for the resourceful Superintendent Hannasyde, who sets off on the trail of a killer so cunning that even his consummate powers of detection are tested to their limits.

Two deaths - the suicide of a recently fired worker and the murder of an unscrupulous businessman - lead Inspector Montalbano to the Halcyon, a mysterious ship that visits Vigàta's port each day. With very few crewmen, no passengers and a stern large enough to land a helicopter, it piques the Inspector's interest straight away. And whilst all this is going on, a rare trip to Genoa to visit Livia ends with the Vigàta police department in disarray, and Inspector Montalbano's position as the head of the commissariat in jeopardy. Summary
December 1938. Moscow. Josef Stalin has lost some gold. He is not a happy man. He asks his henchman, Beria, to track it down.
September 1940. London. Above the city the Battle of Britain rages, and the bombs rain down. On the streets below, DCI Frank Merlin and his officers investigate the sudden disappearance of Polish RAF pilot Ziggy Kilinski while also battling an epidemic of looting unleashed by the chaos and destruction of the Blitz.
Kilinski’s fellow pilots, a disgraced Cambridge don, Stalin’s spies in London, members of the Polish government in exile and a ruthless Russian gangster are amongst those caught up in Merlin’s enquiries. Sweeping from Stalin’s Russia to Civil War Spain, from Aztec Mexico to pre-war Poland, and from Hitler’s Berlin to Churchill’s London, a compelling story of treasure, grand larceny, treachery, torture and murder unfolds. Eventually, as Hitler reluctantly accepts that the defiance of the RAF has destroyed his chances of invasion for the moment, a violent shoot-out in Hampstead leads Merlin to the final truth...and Stalin to his gold.
Stalin’s Gold is the latest in the Frank Merlin Series and follows on from Princes Gate.

London's wartime detective
Merlin has to struggle to do his work while London is being bombed. The find of a gold bar stamped with Polish markings leads his investigating their community. He is also asked to unofficially investigate the disappearance of a polish flyer. The night bombings, the fires and looters all make London a very dangerous place for Merlin and his team.
This is the second book in the Merlin chronicle and is as good as the first one. Read by the same narrator who adds depth and enjoyment to the characters.

Any additional comments?
If you are a fan of the WW11 era and enjoy PI novels, this book is for you. I will say that there are a huge amount of characters and you might find it hard to keep up with for a few hours, but if you can deal with that then you will settle in to an engrossing, enjoyable and detailed story. The Narration was ok, decent accents but could have been better.
This is a mini journey through time where the era of ww11 is the destination, very riveting. I liked Frank marrow and his methods; gritty, tough and ruthless at times. I disliked how the story jumped about with so many characters; but as I said if you are able to keep up with that then this book is for you, and therefore a good reason for me not to mark it down as such.

Books in the series listed out of order
A great story and very good narrator but it is annoying that Audible have listed this as BOOK 1 when according to the author's website, it is the 2nd book in the series. BOOK 2 listed here, is shown as the first book in the series by the author.
