Story
Between 1917 and 1921, a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. Many regard this savage civil war as the most influential event of the modern era. An incompatible White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky's Red Army and Lenin's single-minded Communist dictatorship. Terror begat terror, which in turn led to even greater cruelty with man's inhumanity to man, woman and child.

In The Death of Truth, a short and powerful new polemic, Oborne shows how Boris Johnson lied again and again in order to secure victory so he could force through Brexit in the face of parliamentary opposition. Johnson and his ministers then lied repeatedly to win the general election in December 2019. The government’s woeful response to the coronavirus pandemic has generated another wave of falsehoods, misrepresentations and fabrications.

The storming of the Capitol on 6 January 2021 revealed the transition from President Trump to President Biden to be one of the most dangerous periods in American history, with the result of the election called into question by the sitting president. But, as internationally best-selling author Bob Woodward and acclaimed reporter Robert Costa reveal for the first time, it was far more than just a domestic political crisis.

Story
Disasters are inherently hard to predict. But when catastrophe strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck. We have science on our side, after all. Yet the responses of many developed countries to a new pathogen from China were badly bungled. Why? While populist rulers certainly performed poorly in the face of the pandemic, Niall Ferguson argues that more profound pathologies were at work - pathologies already visible in our responses to earlier disasters.

A huge swath of Americans have put their faith in Trump, and Trump only, because they see the rest of the country building a future that doesn't have a place for them. If they would risk their lives for Trump in a pandemic, they will certainly risk the stability of American democracy. They brought the Trumpocalypse upon the country, and a post-Trumpocalypse country will have to find a way either to reconcile them to democracy - or to protect democracy from them.

One of the first steps of that mission was to uncover who had killed Sergei and profited from the $230 million corruption scheme that he had exposed. As Browder and his team tracked the money that flowed out of Russia—through the Baltics and Cyprus and on to Western Europe and the Americas—they discovered that Vladimir Putin himself was one of the beneficiaries of the crime.

Donald Trump and His Assault on Truth is based on the only comprehensive compilation and analysis of the more than 16,000 fallacious statements that Trump has uttered since the day of his inauguration. He has repeated many of his most outrageous claims dozens or even hundreds of times as he has sought to bend reality to his political fantasy and personal whim. Drawing on Trump's tweets, press conferences, political rallies, and TV appearances, The Washington Post identifies his most frequently used misstatements, biggest whoppers, and most dangerous deceptions.

The stark issue at hand is whether we will be the masters of information and machines or its slaves.

The story of Donald Trump’s rise to power is the story of a buried American history - buried because people in power liked it that way. It was visible without being seen, influential without being named, ubiquitous without being overt. Sarah Kendzior’s Hiding in Plain Sight pulls back the veil on a history spanning decades, a history of an American autocrat in the making. In doing so, she reveals how our continual loss of freedom, the rise of consolidated corruption, and the secrets behind a burgeoning autocratic United States have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

In 1962 the American statesman Dean Acheson famously charged that Britain had lost an empire and failed to find a new role. Nearly 60 years later the rebuke rings true again. Britain's postwar search for its place in the world has vexed prime ministers and government since the nation's great victory in 1945: the cost of winning the war was giving up the empire. After the humiliation of Anthony Eden's Suez expedition, Britain seemed for a time to have found an answer.

Summary
Bloomsbury presents Shadow Network by Anne Nelson, read by Katherine Fenton.
In 1981, emboldened by Ronald Reagan’s election, a group of some 50 Republican operatives, evangelicals, oil barons and gun lobbyists met in a Washington suburb to coordinate their attack on civil liberties and the social safety net. These men and women called their coalition the Council for National Policy. Over four decades, this elite club has become a strategic nerve centre for channelling money and mobilising votes behind the scenes. Its secretive membership rolls represent a high-powered roster of fundamentalists, oligarchs and their allies, from Oliver North, Ed Meese and Tim LaHaye in the council’s early days to Kellyanne Conway, Ralph Reed, Tony Perkins, and the DeVos and Mercer families today.
In Shadow Network, award-winning author and media analyst Anne Nelson chronicles this astonishing history and illuminates the coalition’s key figures and their tactics. She traces how the collapse of American local journalism laid the foundation for the Council for National Policy’s information war and listens in on the hardline broadcasting its members control. And she reveals how the group has collaborated with the Koch brothers to outfit Radical Right organisations with state-of-the-art apps and a shared pool of captured voter data - outmanoeuvring the Democratic Party in a digital arms race whose result has yet to be decided.
In a time of stark and growing threats to our most valued institutions and democratic freedoms, Shadow Network is essential listening.

Critical to understanding our current political dynamics.
This book chronicles the inception, evolution and ongoing victorious implementation of the political strategy that has brought to power a nexus of fundamentalist Christians, Gun rights advocates, anti-abortion advocates and anti-government proponents (including corporate scions of some of our most-polluting industries).
It details some of the outright fabrications regarding, for example, Hillary Clinton, Planned Parenthood and abortion, that have been employed so effectively. It also describes their ultimate goal as these groups themselves have described - destroying the current democratic and (relatively) environmentally-regulatory government and replacing it with a theocracy in support of big business and wealth concentration. That the religious and business groups support each other for the political bounty each provides the other is clear in this detailed history.
There are many other aspects of the rise of this nexus and Donald Trump in their service. But this piece of the process - the political campaign (which is ongoing) - is essential to understand how these groups ave been activated and organized, and how despite holding minority views, have come to dominate our community, state and national politics - from legislation to funding and courts.
It’s dramatic. If you care about democracy, you need to read this book.

Nothing and nobody comes close to unmasking and presenting the otherwise invisible network of the CNP like Anne Nelson. Robert Mercer is never tied to the CNP in articles or news stories. In fact the CNP is almost never mentioned anywhere. With Trump having so many connections to both the CNP and the John Birch Society only the latter is ever mentioned, I assume for their seeming irrelevance. But the extremely relevant CNP lurks in the shadows. Thank you for shining a light on the shiny well packaged swamp taking over our federal and local governments.

Anne Nelson Call‘s back the curtains on the separation of church and state in the United States of America. Citing previous research and making clear cogent arguments Ms. Nelson put front and center with dystopian vision of the religious right. Add to this text with “dark money“ and you will never elect another a member of the party of Lincoln again for any position anywhere. These are people driven by Craven greed and control.

Very detailed accounting of the rise and recent success of the Christo-fascist "evangelical" movement in America.
