AN ABSOLUTELY, MAGNIFICENT , MASTERPIECE!!
- By Bernice on 24-11-16
Summary
In this thrilling new Night Rebel series set in New York Times best-selling author Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress world, sexy and ruthless vampire Ian finally meets his match!
The rule breaker...
Master vampire Ian is unrepentant, shameless...and every shade of wicked. He’s made one too many enemies in his two centuries of existence, including Dagon, a demon who now lays claim to his soul. Ian’s only chance to escape Dagon is to join forces with a Law Guardian, but he's never been able to abide by the rules for long.
The lawmaker...
Veritas’ normal role is police, judge, and jury to reprobates like Ian. But she has her own ax to grind with Dagon, so if she can use Ian as bait...well, all’s fair in law and war. As they scour supernatural hot spots to perfect their trap, Veritas soon realizes Ian’s carefully cultivated devil-may-care roguish image hides something much more powerful. And Ian discovers Veritas has shocking secrets of her own.
As they’re drawn to each other with a passion as intense as their peril, either love or justice will prevail. But each will have devastating consequences.

Absolutely Brilliant plot twisting different book yet still some of the same characters well I thought they were the same “wink”
I have been waiting for this book for so long & wow it did not disappoint, the twists & turns & the difference to most of the other books yet still occasionally bringing in a character from other books was brilliantly done.
The complexity of both Ian & Veritas’s characters went above & beyond, thank you Jeaniene Frost for your fantasticly talented brain 😁

My goodness where can I start I loved this book!! Could not stop listening! Ian has always been and intriguing character but I had no idea what a story about him would be like. He is a super sexy bad boy and was a perfect leading man. I loved seeing a different side to him that still included all his previously liked qualities.
Quality of reading is excellent good pace, great accents! Think I’m going to listen to it again right now!!

Listened to over 390 books/never left a review:
I love... LOVE... supernatural adult books. I've listened/read so many. I've listened to all of Frost's other books and thought I couldn't enjoy anything as much... but oh my **** this is the unbelievable, most necessary paranormal romance novel that must be listened to ever. Literally, my first review of over 390+ books and I don't even want to write anything other than, READ THIS/LISTEN TO THIS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT NOW. Frost.... there are no words... narrator, at first her voice takes 5 or so chapters to get used to and then you love it.... LOVE.
Stop reading this review, stop listening to all other books that come before this... STOP YOUR DAY JOB... and for everything possible listen to this book.
I realize this review means nothing to those that don't know me, but please believe me, this is amazing.... so much so that I refuse to listen to the last 25 minutes of this book!
WHAT!? You may say: What is she thinking?
And I have never done this...
But I don't even want to know if this book ends on a cliff hangar; I'm just stopping now. In order to enjoy these characters, story, plot... it all!
FROST: You have outdone yourself!

I LOVED everything about this!!!!
I have hundreds on audiobooks under my belt and this is the first review I am writing and it is because not only did I absolutely love this novel but I really want to defend Tavia Gilbert’s narration. I have every single installment of Ms. Frost’s series and the spinoffs. I have enjoyed all of them and I really enjoyed Ms. Gilbert’s narration even when some of the voices were a little “off” (ie...the last Night Prince installment, which was my least favorite but still good). However, she does a pretty darn good job of recreating accents on characters that sometimes go years in between being voiced. The criticism of her voicing of Veritas’ voice is absurd for one really important reason - I don’t want to give too much away because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone - but I will say this. To this point the law guardian has been a minor, albeit important, character we see occasionally throughout the series - this is the first book that she plays a lead role. To that end, previously she is voiced as a modern quasi American accented woman but she is over 4000 years old (we know that because it was talked about previously). Her original accent cannot possibly be the way it seemed in previous installments (mind you, none of us can really know what a 4000 year old dialect would sound like but as readers/listeners we should be able to get behind her not sounding “American” when she speaks English, yeah?). Bravo Ms. Gilbert - you drew me into this story from minute one.
On to the story. I absolutely loved it. I loved the direction you went in Ms. Frost. I didn’t realize that this was going to be another series at first and then when I found out I wasn’t sure Ian and Veritas’ could drive another series but I am so attached to them already that it’s going to be incredibly hard to wait for book 2. I have two all time favorite paranormal series I am passionate about and this is one of them. I cannot wait for it to move on. Thank you for creating another branch of this fantastic world you’ve created.

Narrators Accent is Annoying But Story worth the annoyance!
I usually love Tavia Gilbert’s narration and she has so much talent, but I hated the main characters accent. It got better in the middle of the book as it didn’t seem quite so thick and by the end there were places where she dropped the accent altogether. This was distracting. The story was entertaining and what I’ve come to expect from Jeaniene Frost.

I didn't want it to end
I didn't want it to end.... and it didn't. Shades of Wicked is the first in a series featuring Ian and Veritas... and now we have to wait for the next installment.
The pair has amazing chemistry! The story-line was fast paced, exciting, and sexy. I wondered how Ian's story would work out and was not disappointed. And the cameo appearances of Bones, Cat, and crew just added to the enjoyment.
I loved Tavia Gilbert's narration, including her take on Veritas' accent (what does ancient Sumerian sound like, anyway?). She gave us the sense of a very strong individual with ancient roots.... perfect for Veritas.
So now that I've devoured this volume, I'll say it politely: write quickly, Ms Frost! We're ready for the next one.

Meh
The story is told from heroine's first person POV and that inner voice makes her sound like a naive, whiny, hormonal teenager rather than what she is written as: a 4000 yr old ancient powerful vampire with lots of secret talents. In fact, in the beginning, she appears to be bested by the hero at almost every turn. She is also too emotional, makes you wonder how she survived 4000 yrs. I dislike any plot that has extended drunken scenes inserted for pseudo humor purposes. Why would someone who is about to go on a highly dangerous raid drugs herself into oblivion? We are told it's because it would force the drug dealers to go to the source but surely there's a smarter way. The heroine's cringey drunken behavior is a real turn off. How unoriginal and tedious to be listening to endless recounting of speech slurring, drunk talking, puking, hangover headaches and the like? The part where she claims the hero as her husband seems totally contrived and comes out of the blue. I know the author is trying to herd them towards a sexual relationship except it just seems so out of place. I dunno.
I also missed the reason why the heroine is going after the demon at that precise time in history when he’s been her enemy for 4000 yrs. As far as I can tell, she hasn’t acquired new skills, the demon isn’t at a particularly vulnerable stage, and the hero isn’t the only demon branded being she can use.
I'm never a fan of contemporary 1st person POV narratives, especially action adventure types. It just sounds so "me me" all the time and the format prevents telling any part of the story from anyone else's POV which in my mind, limits a story's potential, especially writing by an unskilled writer.
Gilbert's accent is very tiresome to listen to, although I think she lost most of the accent towards the end. However I'm not a fan of her OTT delivery.

Why change the accent????
I love every one of the Night Huntress, NH World and Night Prince novels... And as we all know, Veritas appears in quite a few of them. Why the drastic change in accent for this book? I was so confused in the first chapter, I kept thinking I was listening to a different character because the accent is so different than in the other books. At one point in the first couple chapters, Ian even says something like, "you barely have an accent," and it make me snort. Anyway, good story, like always, but very distracting to change the character's voice and dialect...

Enjoyed the story more than I expected but hated the changes the narrator made to a few characters voices.
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read/listen to Ian’s book but I’m glad I did. I really enjoyed his story more than I thought I would. In fact, his story might be one of my favorites from the whole series. It was fun, hilarious, sexy and steamy. I loved Ian and Varitas together. I didn’t even mind the cliffhanger. I expected the ending to be the typical cliched cliffhanger but was pleasantly surprised that that didn’t happen.
My only gripe with the book was the narrator’s changing of a few character’s voices. I have loved Tavia Gilbert’s narration of the original series as well as all the spin off series, too, but I didn’t like the noticeable changes in some of the characters. It took me awhile to get use to the new voice used for Veritas’s character, as it was changed considerably in this book from the one used in the other series. But my biggest issues the change made to Bones voice! I can’t for the life of me figure out why his voice needed to change in Ian’s book. It was jarring and, frankly, I hated it. I’m actually fine with the new voice used for Veritas, she wasn’t a huge character in the other series and her voice change did become her own in this book, but Bones was a huge character in the original series and it’s was so disappointing to hear a new voice used for him in this book. I hated it!
That said, I very much enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next.
