"For the greater good ... whatever the cost."
Secrets of Peace is a quick (a little over six and one half hours) easy read dystopian, post apocalyptic YA story and, prezumably, first of a series. Following major world conflict, the Peace Project was initiated, with trained operatives organized into units to police and eradicate any future disrultion. Indoctrinated with their future roles from childhood, these operatives live separately from the general population, each unit designated by arm band colour and each with a specific role to pefgorm. The reader is introduced to twenty something Jared, devoted to the cause, excellent at what he does and in training to become the next chairman of his section (one of five), and to Zira, just eighteen and newly graduated to full operative. They are both assassins. After failing to fully execute a mission, Zira is partnered with Jared.
This book is written simply, almost starkly, fairly detailed in what it tells but leaving large gaps unfillsd. We learn, for example, that all of those living within the compound grew up without their parents, and why, but not how. Only occasional mentions of other bullying youngsters. Nor how each operative is selected for the units which decide their ultimate occupations. In fact, there is almost nothing other than the in-the-moment thought and observations and, without a background base, this left a feeling of the whole book being insubstantial and the main character, Zira, rather flaky and pathetic. Unlike her only girl friend, who appears quite bruefly, but nevertheless feels far more real.
Narration was by Daisy Fair, whose pleasant voice greatly helped the character development of Zira. Her voicing of the other characters, too, was distinctive, and she read with expression. As with several other teenage dystopian books, this could probably be turned into a decent young person's futuristic thriller film with the romantic aspect simmering below the surface and the actors eloquently portraying the character not quite fulfilled in the written word. My thanks to the rights holder of Secrets of PEACE, who, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. It was enjoyable, but both predictable and irritating in that it could have been so much more satisfying. Recommended for the YA reader, but it fails to translate for the older reader.

Gosh! Exciting and a little bit scary!!
This story is fascinating. It is set in a world in the future, post a major war and after humans have basically destroyed the world. Democracy had been corrupted and, after the war, was replaced by the Peace Project. Sounds promising until the protagonist, an 18 year old assassin with the Project, realises that the goal is peace at any costs.
While completing an assignment, things go wrong for Zira and she is left wondering if she is doing the right thing. Is the cost too high? Who is actually paying this cost? Is the Peace Project really committed to the benefit of all mankind? This audiobook is the first in the series and it sets the stage for a thrilling series. Of course it leaves the audience with more questions! The story is incomplete but so promising!
TA Hernandez manages to capture the complexity of the story and the characters. Zira is a dichotomy. She is, experienced and innocent, accepting of the situation and yet inquisitive. It is inevitable that she finds herself at a crossroads where all she has been taught clashes with what she is uncovering. Daisy Fair does a commendable job of expressing this complexity in her narration of the story.
I enjoyed this audiobook and look forward to finding out where the series takes our characters!
