Summary

James Bond is back in action, with the stunning Flicka von Grusse at his side and his license to kill renewed once more. His target is Sir Maxwell Tarn: a businessman whose legitimate empire spans the globe, whose wealth is uncountable, who also deals in illegal weapons on a breathtaking scale.

But even Bond is unprepared for the speed of events, as a sting operation in a Cambridge hotel leads rapidly to an assassination in Spain, a fugitive in Israel, and neo-Nazi plotters in Germany.

Bond finally catches up with Tarn in Puerto Rico, where his prey becomes his captor. Can he escape in time to stop Tarn?

Another John Gardner, James Bond book.

I have to say that of all the bond authors John Gardner is becoming boring. His stories are predictable. You can very easily see where they are going. They are not in the same league as the original Ian Fleming stories. And there is a definite element of woke which ruins the ambience of the bond story.

Worst Bond ever?

This is not a good Bond novel. It is largely a plagiarised version of Moonraker with a few twists, and a very disappointing ending that doesn't so much reach a climax as peter out with a whimper. The characters are poorly crafted, exceptionally wooden - and the "femme fatales" are unmemorable, poor simulacrums of Wint and Kidd or Bambi and Thumper but without the interesting characterization.

Even the plot is 2nd rate - once you learn of the diabolical escapade our antagonist has planned you are left wondering just why anyone would try such a thing. The plot holes are very wide and plentiful, probably large enough to pilot a submarine through.

There is no menace here, just a cash cow that only completists would ever want to endure.

Decent Bond Tale

Not his best, but far from his worst. Gardner has some nice bond touches but a bit too much Roger Moore and not enough Fleming bond. Vance is great as always. Although the villains voice is a bit comedic.

Back to Bond Brilliance

This is a proper Bond story, with an eccentric Villain wanting world domination, sadistic Henchpersons, great locations, gadgets, guns and plenty of guts!
