Summary
It's not easy being a rebel. So many new skills to assimilate. Never mind strategic planning, weapons expertise and the like - there's bicycle stealing, oil-stain removal and boat steering to be mastered first. And quickly.
It's the time of the Civil Uprisings, and two young women set out to make a difference. Their only problem? They don't know where they are. Or where they're going. Or what to do when they get there. Other than that...
Fans of St Mary's will enjoy this glimpse into the past of some of their favourite characters.

Too short a story for this historical event!
This story is set on St George's day, when three minor but important characters meet to remember the part they played in the Battersea Barricades. As this event is referred to in the series I wanted to find out more. While I learned a lot about some of the characters, the event itself and the link to Thirsk and the founding of St Marys was not fully explored. The role played by other characters who were involved, such as Major Guthrie, was not explored, so ultimately I felt there was a much bigger novel here waiting to get out. Maybe one day it will.

Story was very interesting, and a little bit worrying Don't believe it couldn't happen. History shows all sorts of unbelievable things. Good narration.

Timeless message and fascinating backstory
This is an interlude novella and could be consumed anytime after the first few books in the chronicles. It is the backstory of three of the St Mary's female staff who have pivotal, yet seemingly inactive roles. It precedes their joining St Mary's and demonstrates their strength in many senses of the term. The context is a credible breakdown of order with an inept government exercising power through fear and imposing martial law on UK citizens. No prizes for guessing whose side our St Mary's heroines actively support. A greater appreciation of the values and motive forces the personnel at our favourite historical institute espouse is derived. I was particularly touched by the closing scene. Clever to have tied it to the patron saint of England's day. Jodi Taylor skillfully provokes thought and assessment of your own values and motivations whilst entertaining and informing.
Zara Ramm performs brilliantly in bringing the text to life and investing appropriate emotion and mood. Characters are easily distinguished and have an impressive array of accents. I hope you enjoy this entertaining yet stimulating listen as much as I did.

Another cracker from Jodi Taylor and Zara Ramm
As usual St Mary's is a total delight. Jodi's story telling and Zara's narration are an absolute match made in heaven. This audiobook does nit disappoint at all. Laughter, tears and a wonderful look into some wonderful St Mary's characters histories.
