Summary

The Ghosts of the Tanith First-and-Only have been away from the front line for too long. Listless and hungry for action, they are offered a mission that perfectly suits their talents.

The objective: the mysterious Salvation's Reach, a remote and impenetrable stronghold concealing secrets that could change the course of the Sabbat Worlds campaign. But the proposed raid is so hazardous, it's regarded as a suicide mission, and the Ghosts may have been in reserve for so long they've lost their edge. Haunted by spectres from the past and stalked by the Archenemy, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his Ghosts embark upon what could be their finest hour...or their final mission.

Great story, dubious performance.

I love the Gaunt's Ghosts series and story wise, this is no exception. The usual rich tapestry of characters old and new, great plot line and extremely well written story we have come to expect from the exceptional Mr Abnett.
Unfortunately, the performance let's it down badly. James McPherson puts in a decent effort, however he falls short of the mark badly in my opinion. Although reasonably varied, the characters lack the definition they deserve. It feels as though he is not familiar with the 40k universe, or at least not with the characters he is narrating. Mad Larkin sounds like the deranged 'wise woman' from Blackadder, Gaunt like a junior lieutenant with none of the power and confidence of a commander. Space marines that sound more like a mentally challenged or illiterate voldermort than the emperors finest. Dan Abnett's writing contains a great deal of detail and description in regards to his characters. When this is ignored in the performance it ruins the whole thing for me.
The rest of the series is superb as usual. Unfortunately this instalment is found wanting.

The performance meant I couldn't finish it

I love these books but the performance just jumps me straight out of the world and the previous stories. I tried many times to continue the story each time I just couldn't keep track of the characters with all the new voices. The space marines sound bad and the stammer and accents just slow everything down in a bad way.

I'm sure him reading something else might be fine but not this If he had read the first guants ghosts book I wouldn't have listened to any of the others. I will buy the book instead.

great story, awful narration

I loved the story but the narrator is awful. the space marine sounds ridiculous and Larkin is just plain irritating

What happened?

I've been on a Gaunts Ghosts binge and this has completely derailed me. The change in narrator just ruins it. I'm sure he's good but he isn't Toby Longworth.
The soft melodious Welsh/Scotts accent of the Taniths is all gone and now it just sounds like a bad copy of a monty python sketch.
The deep growl of the Vergastites is gone.
Gaunt sounds like a twelve year old.
GW would do good business rerecording this and any others and using the real deal.
Toby was just perfect at this narration.

Good story, bad rendition

Good story but the performance made it a labor to finish. The narrator's range and tone of the important characters is very bad.

Dan Abnett delivers as always

A great story as always. The narrator did a great job with the various accents for the characters. However I did find it a struggle to begin with, being used to Toby’s usual character voices made it a little difficult to gel with at first.

better narration required

Not a fan of this narrator but the story is excellent. Irritating new pronunciations of some of the prominent characters

For Tanith

A great story from one of the Black Library's best writers with all the pulse pounding action you expect from an Imperial Guard novel and some added goodies for the road. Added points for the Scottish narrator to really make it feel as if you're right their with the Ghosts

'Doo yah wahn tah leeve fourevah?'

Great Scottish Reader. Abnett slightly too ambitious with many new characters, but still very good
