Publisher's Summary

Lieutenant Cora Harper joined the Systems Alliance to develop and enhance her powerful biotic talents. She was assigned to the asari commando unit Talein's Daughters, where she honed her abilities to become a skilled and deadly huntress.

Returning to Earth, Cora finds herself a stranger among other humans, and joins the Andromeda Initiative as Alec Ryder's second-in-command. The mission will send 100,000 colonists on a one-way, 600-year-long journey into the unknown. When essential - and dangerous - tech is stolen, Cora is assigned to recover it before it can be used against the Initiative, and end the mission before it can begin.

"All the feels for Mass Effect"

I've enjoyed the other ME tie-in media, but this book is the first one that evoked the feeling of playing ME 1-3. I particularly enjoyed the way Jemisin & Walters' telling of Cora's story. The book also gave the context and emotional weight I was looking for in my first playthrough of ME: Andromeda. Time to pick up ME:A again. :)

    "Ok...Not bad...Not great"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

An ok book. As a huge fan of the games - it was worth a listen. But I don’t think MEA has enough depth and breadth in its lore to rival with the Original Trilogy just yet. Alas, we didn’t really learn anything new (that wasn’t anticipated by the community) about the MEA universe or Cora herself. Still going to romance her in my next playthrough though:) She is a good character.

What three words best describe Fryda Wolff’s voice?

I liked Fryda’s voice work as FemRyder in the game, but I think BioWare can do better in finding a narrator. She has trouble doing male voice AND (which is just unforgivable) miss pronounces a lot of names and locations (like Palaven). Let me tell you, nerds like me are very sensitive to that.

    Consider the following narrators:
    Alix Wilton Regan
    Miranda Raison
    Ali Hillis
    Tricia Janine Helfer

    Any additional comments?

Let’s hope “the lost ark” makes up for lack of DLC and lore so far (yes, we are still mad about that).

    "Continue the series"

I love the series of games, yes...even the last one, and also love the books as well. I really want both the games to continue and these stories too. I very rich realm for story tellers and they've all knocked it out of the park.

    "Great story lousy pathfinder"
What made the experience of listening to Mass Effect: Initiation the most enjoyable?

The story was very well written and the narration very enjoyable. I honestly would have preferred Fryda Wolff to perform Sam and Cora in the game over the voice actors they went with.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Mass Effect: Initiation?

I am a strong believer in avoiding spoilers but this book answers a bunch of questions about Cora fans of Andromeda posted. The biggest of course why did Alec choose his child to be Pathfinder over Cora? The real reason is players don't control Cora but this is the in-universe explanation.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Again I want to avoid spoilers but seeing things from Cora's perspective with her wicked sense of humor. Andromeda the game would have benefited GREATLY if we saw that same sense of humor, and other character traits in the game that she shows here.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I had Andromeda the game on mute while listening to this story. For me it really enhanced both the book and the game.

    Any additional comments?

This is a really good book but should be listened to after playing the all the games. The book assumes you are familiar with the universe and overall Mass Effect lore so the things that I loved and cheered for would turn off a listener that has no frame of reference for what's going on. I know this seems like a dig but I honestly feel that if you aren't emotionally invested in the Mass Effect universe you are going to hate the book but if you are invested it's really going to be an enjoyable expansion the stories we all love. Almost like the DLC we will never get for Andromeda.

    "Not really feeling this story"

This was not a bad story, but there's no passion in this story I will leave it to others to chose if they would to take listen to this book you might enjoy it and you might not.

    "A comics book story"

Super heroes, super powers, humanity builds an arc ship out of doubtful reasons, AI issues - all that mixed up in a story with no beginning and no end. After triumphant masterpiece of Broken Earth this story feels like written by a different author. The narrator matches the book. Awful.
