Seen from abroad.
If you could sum up Robert E. Lee and His High Command in three words, what would they be?
Profound, dispassionate, engaging.
What did you like best about this story?
The course is didactic without being pedantic.
What does Professor Gary W. Gallagher bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
His clear and obvious enthusiasm for his subject.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, because one needs time to consider and digest each lecture.
Any additional comments?
The Civil War continues to divide the United States and Prof. Gallagher is American, therefore attuned and involved in the continuing debate. To foreigners the debate is much more clear cut, the Civil War was the true American Revolution.
Lee is seen abroad as a great captain, no doubt about that, but one with feet of clay and Gallagher sees him in the soft focus that is commonplace in the US. However, he is generous to Longstreet which is nice to hear.

BRILLIANT & BALANCED
Whether you're an academic, politician, or enthusiastic hobbyist, if you're interested in wars and the people who fight them from a point of view of understanding why they happen, how they proceed, and how they end, then this course is for you.
If you're interested in the kind of people who are motivated to fight wars, then this course is for you. I have heard many of GWG's lectures on you tube and find his depth of knowledge and balanced views very attractive, which is why I downloaded this course. The time just flew by while listening.

Superb
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the lectures from Mr. Gallagher. He delivered a very fair representation of Lee, Longstreet, Jackson and the other Confederate commanders in the Army of Northern Virginia.
I would recommend these lectures and the written work of Mr. Gallagher.
Superb stuff indeed.

Great ...but where’s Nathan Bedford Forrest?
I really enjoyed this interesting and well-presented series of lectures but was disappointed that Forrest was not included. I think omitting one of the most successful CSA generals, albeit a highly controversial one, is a serious oversight.

A promise fulfilled
Where does Robert E. Lee and His High Command rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It was middle of the road for me. The high marks came from the fact that, should you like Confederate/Civil War history (turns out I don't), this is one of the best overviews of Robert E. Lee and His High Command and indeed the war effort I've yet come across. If you really want an intermediate level lecture series on the Civil War, get it on.

Superb
This is an outstanding course, very objective and brilliantly delivered by an academic who is clearly a master of his subject. It is a great summary of the history of the Eastern war through these fascinating biographies. It is also an interesting study in the people management challenges and limitations faced by RE Lee.

This course very much assumes you are an American
This course very much assumes you are an American and have knowledge of all the locations, events and people talked about. It provides little guidance or structure and I have stopped it on chapter 4 after losing the plot. I would have much rather followed Lee from young age to old age rather than skipping from random battle to random battle.
