Summary
In the streets of Chicago exists an uneasy, centuries-old truce between vampires and their distant cousins, a race of shifters called drecks. Vampire enforcement agency, All the King's Men (AKM), is charged with maintaining the truce, but when volatile enforcer Micah Black loses his mate and falls into the biological agony that results from the broken bond, he tests the boundaries of the truce by seeking out Apostle, a leader in the dreck community. Micah wants Apostle to kill him, a request Apostle is more than happy to fulfill.
When ex-Army medic-turned exotic dancer Samantha Garrett inadvertently disrupts the plot and saves Micah's life, a chain reaction sets Micah's heart on a collision course with hers, but he will have to protect her from Apostle and her obsessive ex-husband if they will have a chance at forever.

.Rise with me.
In this book I got to connect with more than one character. This book had alternating character situations, but it was always easy to know when the book shifted to another character's point of view, because they were spaced out appropriately. It offers a very different spin on the Vampire and Shapeshifter dynamic .The Shapeshifters are called Dreks and are not wolves but they can change from human to human form ,a great disguise ,They can also take on their own blue form. The vamps and Dreks have a very uneasy peace after a war a few hundred years ago.The Dreks are inferior in strength and mostly all powers to the Vamps .This annoys them and riles them up to say the least. There is a lot of background on the dynamic of these two groups but its quite repetative as oppose to expanding on the issue. We start the story off from the POV of Mikah ,a Vampire who works for AKM(All The King’s Men)he has just lost his Mate ,Jaxon.he is suicidal and self harming or making others hurt him physically to release the emotional painand in self imposed isolation.Even from Tristin a good friend who would have been looking for Mikah sooner is he wasn’t taking care of his wife who is pregnant .Mikah had bonded to Jaxon even though he had never been interested in men before. When a Vamoine bonds to a mate it causes psychological and physical changes so that if the bonds bindings are stretched it really hurts the vampire.Jaxon did not “Mate “ Mikah back and left him .Honestly he seems as shallow as a puddle.I wont lie ,I did not like Mikah when This first started ,his “Screw the world attitude” towards his friends who were just trying to help did not come off as cool or make him seem like the big tough guy on campus but a jerk who would bring everyone down with him which he very nearly does by asking the head of the Dreks, John Apostle, to kill him, they were happy to oblige and a group of them started hitting Mikah because he “needed” the physical pain.If they had succeeded , more than likely the uneasy peace between the two races would have shattered like crystal hitting a marble floor.Luckily an ex military hottie by the name if Sam saves him from this fate and Mikah becomes infatuated and wants her as his.She in on the run from her psycho wife beating husband so from here on in I will say no more about the story line as I don’t want to reveal a spoiler.I love Sam and did so from the moment she came to the “pages” she is vulnerable but fierce .Determined yet cautions. And now the Dreaks are after her because she stopped them from killing Mikah ,robbing of his prize.Apostle does not want anyone to hurt Sam , she is his for the killing! There are some lines in the book that I think are the sort of thing that comes out of your mouth and you cringe and wish you had phrased it differently. If it wasn’t for Sam,Tres (another vamp ,but a day-walker half breed) and the amazing sex scenes I don’t think I could have powered through this book.I hat hate hate giving a bad review on the story, given the very sweet dedication and that I received this book free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. But If I didn’t mark the story as I see it then my reviews would become useless and my reviews are always my honest opinion. That being said the author did a truly spectacular job with the erotica. The scene with the knife was hot hot hot.If she wrote erotica books I would eagerly buy them but the story part of this production was predictable and a struggle to listen to mostly the first part when Mikah is in his depressiom. The narration was fantastic and I adored her voice for Same.Mikah I think spoiled the book for me, and as he was a main character that kinda sucked. He was like a stroppy teenager,It didn’t help the way he treated Trecion at first.AKM used to be like King Arthur and the round table , now they feel more like enforcers ,stopping the Dreks from harming humans as they thrive on causing pain to humans but really want to inflict it on the Vamps. They are the weaker distant cousins to the Vamps and its like a sort of twisted family tree where the dreks are like 5 times removed.I would listen to books by Donya Lynne again because I think she had a good framework and just meeds to hone her craft and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy an erotica book by her as it was panty droping good.So I have given the story a 3 and the overall a 4 to try to make a 3.5 vote.As always this in my honest opinion.

Not What I Expected
This book was not what I expected, I did not expect to like the characters within this story nor, did I expect to enjoy the story but I did. Michah and Sam's relationship was extremely intriguing as was a number of the other characters relationships that develop.
Due to it being an audio book and the type of names within the book, I did sometimes confuse which characters where which something that I do not struggle with when reading, however that did not take away anything from the story. That however may be something on my part.
The Narration of Mikela Drew was what is expected of a narrator, and managed to bring many aspects of the story around.
Two issues I faced with the book was that I sometimes struggled understanding the world, as world building was sometimes pushed aside in the need to develop the stories, romance and characters.
I also found issue with Micah, he was introduced as a hard ass character who takes nothing, but this seems to be forgotten before the end of the story,
I would defiantly give the following books a go.

It has a lot of potential but...
The narrator did a good job bringing the story to life.
I was really looking forward to this audiobook because I really enjoy paranormal romance but it seems like so much was missing. The characters were not well developed and there was little we knew about this world. I did not expect the main male character Micah to have been mated to another male... He was also supposed to be this scary independent warrior but all I saw was a pathetic individual that wanted to end his life. If a bond was that strong it would have taken more time to get over Jackson. I don't understand why there was any M/M intimate moments. If I wanted to listen to any of that in detail, I would head over to another genre.
There was so much that could have been done with this story. It seemed to jump around a lot between characters and much of it was totally irrelevant for the main story. IMO the story did not flow well and a lot of it did not make sense to me. I did not connect with the main characters. I know some people might actually like the things I dislike so I try to explain my reasons the best I can. I'm a big fan of the BDB series. I was hoping to find a similar series but this series is just not for me.

"BROTHERHOOD" SERIES & ALL-GENDER RELATIONSHIPS
Any additional comments?
I was gifted this audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher for an unbiased review.
Introducing AKM... A new series revolving around the vampire members of "All the King's Men," an ancient Royal protectorate group that has evolved to become more of a secret force against the evil Dreks.
The concept is refreshingly new and many players are expertly introduced giving us glimpses into what their stories may be. This first book is about the vampire Micah and the human Samantha. Micah is the group's toughest enforcer and we meet him at the height of despair over the break of a relationship he believed to be a heart-bound mate. Samantha is on the run from a rich but abusive husband. Being ex-military, she uses her in-shape body to stay under the radar as a cash-only exotic dancer. Unfortunately, it was Micah's friend Trace's story that grabbed me the most. Shrouded in a mysterious background and lifestyle, with a surprise identity, he turned out to be the ultimate protector.
The conceptual story is great! The execution, IMO, needed some timeline tweaking?
Introducing Micah as suicidal was a mistake. First impressions, and all, I was never able to see him as the bad-ass his character was meant to be. Also, validating Micah and Sam's connection seems like (the author's) afterthought, written in as an explanatory missing link.
Micah's story should have opened as he celebrated some Alpha victory by watching Samantha dance... leading into his attraction to Jackson. THEN I'd have met an Alpha Micah, understood his later despair in a way experience, not recollection achieves, and the ultimate (life)mate revelation would've fallen easily into place.
I was pleased with the inclusion of genderless relationships; accepting that love is love, regardless. Brushing lightly into BDSM just upped the hotness ante. Everything taken into consideration, it was a good start to a new series.
Two Thumbs Up.

Interesting Story
Micah was one guy that went from total alpha back to wanting to die then back to alpha male. He is saved by Sam who is his true mate and they both have to save her from the dregs that he was allowing to kill him and her crazy X-husband. To top it all off there were hints of M/M which I don't like and am glad that it was just a small part of the story. I can see that one of the author's future books will be about the M/M couple on the team. Probably will not listen to that one. This story did have several twists but a good HEA and the narrator brought the story to life. There were parts that felt like I missed something, went back to listen but it was still not there. So I guess the author slashed it on the editing floor because it felt like something should have been there. loved the whole idea of Trace. Can't wait to listen to his story. I am also interested in the background story of their team leader. Guess I will have to wait on them as well. I got this book via audiobook boom and am happy to leave this review.

Good job, overall. Was missing a few things.
I normally am not a fan of 'human-like' vampires, or female leads with short hair, or domestic violence survival plot devices, but this had enough to let me look past that since it had rare things I did love. Such as several bisexual characters, a little sub/Dom action, and a simple story that didn't bog itself down too much. I'm on the fence about continuing the series because I saw no mention of a pregnancy in the near future and that's probably my biggest interest. So jury is out. Also would have liked to know why the biggest deal in the story (aka, why Jackson broke up with Micah) happened in the first place. that was never explained.

Even though, I love the Brotherhood series, this series is not weighed down with sooooo much angst which got a bit tedious after awhile. I loved how fast the book moved. I also like how there are hints of other characters that may have their own series in books to come. I read fantasy for the fantasy of it. Not for the reality of how long it may take people in real life to be with someone. I found this writer refreshing and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
