Summary

Billionaire investors. If we think of them, it's with a mixture of awe and suspicion. Clearly, they possess a kind of genius - the proverbial Midas Touch. But are the skills they possess transferable? And would we really want to be them? Do they have anything to teach us besides making money?

In Richer, Wiser, Happier, award-winning journalist William Green has spent nearly 25 years interviewing these investing wizards and discovered that their talents expand well beyond the financial realm and into practical philosophy.

Green ushers us into the lives of more than 40 of the world's super-investors, visiting them in their offices, vacation homes and even their places of worship - all to share what they have to teach us. Green brings together the thinking of some of the best investors, from Warren Buffet to Howard Marks to John Templeton, and provides gems of insight that will enrich you not only financially but also professionally and personally.

An incredibly fruitful read

Prior to purchasing this book I thought it would be fluffy, it wasn’t until I heard some highly reputable investors discuss the book that I decided to take the plunge and purchase it.

To my delight it wasn’t fluffy at all, it is ram packed with highly valuable information, anecdotes and more generally favourable approaches to life - not just about money but about assessing what is really important, for example helping others.

I couldn’t recommend this book enough; not just for those interested in investing but also for those who are looking for a novel outlook on life - similar to those of Guy Spier, Warren Buffett & Mohnish Pabrai.

Personally I feel I have gained a wealth of valuable insights from a handful of listening hours, very much time well spent.

Narrator

The narrator seems to think this is Shakespeare. I haven’t even finished the book and he is so distracting; it’s a shame because it’s a great book. I’ll persevere but I imagine many wouldn’t. Ensuring the narrator is well matched to the book is really important but seems to not be considered…it certainly wasn’t in this case.

A masterpiece about investing philosophy

A brilliant book, very well written and extremely interesting. It does provide a wonderful insight on how great investors live and think, without making references to specific investment techniques, but rather only to very broad principles. William Green has spent a lot of energy to go deeply into the mind of those people and has summarized his views in an incredibly effective way. Highly recommended.

Contradictory, banal, and awful narration.

This is chicken soup for the investor. The alleged wisdom is contradictory - in one breath the right thing is to spend no more than a few hours a week working through days, in the next the only right way is to pull 18 hour days. Own just 3 stocks or you’re an idiot, until the next chapter when several hundred is the only right way. It’s horoscope stuff.

And, as usual, the most useful advice in the whole book is basically “start out with a load of money”. If you could arrange to have a job in an investment firm, and to start investing right after a major crisis that would be good too,

The narration is comedic in its ridiculousness, overwrought and dramatic like an intentional parody.

Overall this is a pretty silly book. But it’s harmless.

Great book

If you have every studied Warren Buffett or Howard Marks then ultimately there's probably not very much that is surprising here. However, the book is a brilliantly written summation of the mindset and discipline of some of the best stock pickers of our time.

In many ways the book is similar to the classic "Market Wizards" but for investors rather than traders, which is probably the highest compliment I can give it.

Loved this book

This was a surprise to me as I thought it was about investing but it was so much more. I really hope this book has changed my life. Not to make me richer but to make me wiser. So many things I heard were things I had been thinking about over time but never had the courage to fully commit to as it was different from how most people think. Now I want to go forward compounding good will. Part of this is a selfish reason as I know it comes back to you over time and people tend to help you more than you help them. Thank you William for such a great book

Investment wisdom and philosophy

Being in the field of finance this book certainly wasn't the first one I read on the subject of investing. However I had never regarded the philosophical aspects of investing in such depth and I think this is an aspect which is absolutely unique to Green's presentation of the topic. An audiobook which I will definitely listen several times.

More than I expected, thoroughly enjoyed

More than the investment side it was a pleasure to listen to the life wisdom of these investors. Candid portrayals and deeper exploration of how these people tick.

I am probably going to buy a print version to highlight some of the key ideas that I want to adopt, as well as re-listen
