About this listen

Evil lurks in the kingdom’s shadows. And only an unlikely pair of heroes can stop it....

Thea Flamma has one goal: to bring honor to her noble family by becoming a dragon rider. But her plans take an unexpected turn when she’s paired with Seb, an awkward, scrappy stablehand far removed from the elegance of her world. Their dragon has chosen, and the two must put their differences aside to master the bond that could save the realm.

For Seb, being thrust into the world of dragon riders is as thrilling as it is overwhelming. Gone are the days of obscurity in his poor village, but bonding with Thea proves harder than taming his dragon. Yet despite their rocky start, Seb discovers a connection with their dragon more powerful than he ever imagined.

As whispers of an ancient evil awaken into deadly reality, Thea and Seb are drawn into a desperate race to find the mythical Dragon Stone—a relic said to hold the key to saving the kingdom. But with betrayal lurking in every shadow, they’ll have to decide where their true loyalties lie: in the families they’ve left behind, or in the fragile bond they’re forging together.

Friendship, danger, and fire-breathing adventure collide in this gripping dragon rider tale.

The thrilling boxset, Return of the Darkening: The Complete Series, was expanded and republished in November 2024—now with even more quests, magic and epic battles!

book 1: Seb & Thea learn to work together even though coming from different backgrounds. A well written story that is good for all ages.
book 2: as the trio grows stronger as a team things are getting worse as lord Vincent is back. Now there is an urgent need to make sure he doesn't find all the Dragon Stones.
book 3: the conclusion to Thea and Seb's journey against Vincent and to stop the Darkening. Enjoyed the audio of this series.

I think that this trilogy is best after the first Dragonrider trilogy as there's a number of references to the previous books. It is possible to enjoy as a standalone as it's set 500 years later but I think it's more enjoyable to immerse yourself in the world.

Like the first ones, this is a very rice world full of magic, dragons and learning to face adversety. The characters are believable and you want them to succeed. Whilst listed as targeted as Young Adult fiction, it's appropriate for adults too.

YA dragon adventure characters face sinister enemy.

Don't consume this until you have been through the First Dragon Rider trilogy by the same author. It does work as a standalone, but is set 500 years after the first dragon rider and makes multiple references to events and characters from that trilogy so will spoil your enjoyment and you may miss out on a fuller immersion in Ava Richardson's world of talking dragons, magic and moral choices. This follows the formula of male and female teens who are thrown into rapid and necessary self development and leadership by the threat of malign forces threatening the people and governance of the medieval type kingdom. The origin story and significance of those forces is given in the first dragon rider trilogy. This volume contains three books: Dragon Trial; Dragon Legends and Dragon Bonds presented in correct order with their own introduction and exit section so you can see where you are despite the chapters being numbered consecutively on the player the chapter within each book is announced in the correct order.
Tiffany Williams does a great job of distinguishing who is speaking, but each chapter announces which character's point of view you are getting. She not only distinguishes between male, female and dragon, but also renders differences between the various characters within each group.
There are lots of action scenes, highs and lows in the main characters' fortunes and a lot of menace from the darkening where the enemy has powers linked to the dragon stones they possess. Echoes of JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings with stones of different powrers and the race to find the one ring which unites them. I enjoyed the time I spent in this world and would be intertested in more like this.
