About this listen

The fate of a kingdom rests in the hands of a young apprentice…

Neill Torvald is desperate to master the arcane arts of the Draconis Order. His father’s war-torn kingdom depends on it. But when a deadly ambush nearly claims his life on the way to the monastery, Neill realizes he’ll need more than magic to survive what lies ahead.

At the monastery, he meets Char—a bold, secretive student who harbors suspicions of corruption within the Draconis Order. Alongside Paxala, the dragon Char has raised in secret, the three form an unlikely bond. As Neill’s feelings for Char deepen, so does the threat of war beyond the monastery walls.

Caught between his father’s ambitions and his loyalty to his new allies, Neill faces an impossible choice: protect his family’s legacy or fight for the future he believes in.

The fires of rebellion burn ever closer, and the bond between dragon, rider, and mage will be tested in ways none of them expect.

The electrifying boxset, First Dragon Rider: The Complete Series, was expanded and republished in November 2024—now with even more adventure, dragons and heart-stopping battles!

Overall, this was an enjoyable and engaging trilogy with a strong central storyline and an interesting plot that kept me invested throughout. I particularly liked the character progression of Neill and Char, both of whom felt like they genuinely grew over the course of the series rather than staying static.

The narration deserves a special mention. The narrator did a great job with Pax the dragon, making her seem both adorable and young while still maintaining that arrogant, distinctly dragon-like presence. She was easily one of the highlights of the listening experience.

That said, there were a couple of things that didn’t quite work for me. Plot-wise, it wasn’t always obvious where one book ended and the next began, which made the trilogy feel a little blurred together rather than clearly segmented. Additionally, while there were hints of romance, it never really went anywhere, which felt like a missed opportunity.

Despite these issues, this is a solid fantasy trilogy with a compelling story and memorable characters, and I’d still recommend it to fans of dragon-centric fantasy.

I adore the idea of dragons as an idea. In this series the author has crafted a wonderful world where they have an interesting relationship with humans. The fact that they can speak, is a very unique perspective and it made them feel very alive to me. Although technically targeted for young adults, in my opinion I think it would be well received by much older age groups like myself.

Very enjoyable fantasy novel not just for young adults.

takes a little time to settle into and some of the plot is over simplified but it is an enjoyable story and finally a trilogy with a proper ending

The two main YA protagonists come of age through the course of this trilogy whilst battling against those who should protect and lead . Char befriends a dragon, yet Neil becomes the first dragon rider. This origin story for Ava Richardson's world of magic, dragons and students in a feudal society displays compassion, teamwork, outcasts becoming heroes and telepathy with dragons combining against several malign forces or authorities. It represents good value in giving you all three books, in the correct order and showing how the relatiionships develop and deepen in a very chaste way. There is plenty of action, peril and problems to be overcome.
The narrator is consistent in showing appropriate emotion and distinguishing male, female and dragon voices so you know who is talking. It helps that the viewpoint for each chapter is announced at the beginning as both the male and feisty female main characters feature.
It's a long listen, but I felt immersed and wanted to hear how they would fare and escape the latest peril. Enjoyable and credible as magic has its costs and parameters are consistent in the worldbuilding.
