Summary
The eighth installment in this cozy mystery series features Daisy Dalrymple at the Museum of Natural History, a place of fascination - and murder.
In the summer of 1923, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple makes what should be an uneventful research trip to the Museum of Natural History quite an eventful day - with her nephew, Derek, and her soon-to-be stepdaughter, Belinda, in tow. But as she interviews the various curators for her article on the museums of London, she soon discovers that the Museum of Natural History is a hothouse of professional rivalry and jealousy. Much resentment exists, particularly between Dr. Smith Woodward, the keeper of geology, responsible for the fossil collection, and Dr. Pettigrew, the keeper of mineralogy, responsible for the museum's fabulous gem collection.
On a later trip, as closing time nears, Daisy hears two voices followed by a tremendous crash and rushes into the next hall to discover Dr. Pettigrew dead - murdered amid a pile of dinosaur bones.
Daisy's fiancé, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, is assigned to investigate, and together they must unravel a most baffling case of missing gems, dispossessed European royalty, professional rivalry, and a murder most foul.

Finally, a decent narrator!
Up until this book, the narrations of Carola Dunn’s “Daisy Dalrymple” books have been pretty dire. This is not the fault of the previous narrators themselves, who were presumably Americans trying their best to perform an RP English accent (and sadly failing woefully). It is the fault of the producers of the audio books who should have chosen a reader like Lucy Rayner from the beginning. It would have made the previous audio books much less grating to the ears of British listeners.
This isn’t my favourite “Daisy Dalrymple” title, but it is very good. Previous books include some crackers for fans of this kind of detective fiction. Not that these books should be dismissed as light, cosy, Agatha Christie rip offs, of the sort that abound these days. This is good mystery writing. The storylines don’t stretch credulity in the way that some books and TV shows do (Midsomer Murders, for instance). The books’ setting—Britain during the inter-war period—is well done, and Carola Dunn includes some interesting commentary on the period she is writing about. She explores the attitudes and social customs of the time, particularly with regard to class and social division, and the books are particularly interesting when class ideas come into conflict; for example, the relationship between the Honourable Daisy Dalrymple and the middle-class Scotland Yard detective, Alec Fletcher. The country is also still recovering from the ravages of the Great War and the influenza epidemic of 1919, both of which directly affected Daisy.
I thoroughly recommend these books, even if you have to read the print versions of the first seven books in the series.

I nearly gave up on these books thanks to the awful narration of the first 7 by someone I assume is American doing a bad English accent and the most bizarre and terrible pronunciations ever. I ended up skipping and leaving it on in the background.

Very disappointing
Sorry to say, I thought this was awful. I love following Daisy's adventures, but this story was just so boring from the start. Nothing like the previous books which I loved all of.
I listened to the whole lot just so I could keep up with Daisy and Alec's relationship. The only thing that made this bearable was that Lucy Rayner is such a fantastic narrator. I loved all her accents and she did a fantastic job trying to bring the mundane to life.

Stories worth it, I give up on audio though
Narrator did finally change from Mia Chiaromonte but, though Lucy Rainer is a better reader, her voices are painfully high, and her presentation of Daisy and Lucy—well, of everyone really, but particularly those two—are very off. Too exuberant, too openly emotional. Her calm demeanor and sensible approach are what makes Daisy Daisy. I give up. Am going to have to listen to the text-to-speech versions of the rest (except for book 14 which is oddly Bernadette Dunne again for just the one book). The first 3 books were so wonderfully done by Bernadette Dunne, so try those and then skip all audio versions after that. Otherwise you’ll lose your sense of Daisy’s character.

Ok story but terrible narration
The narrator is a very unfortunate choice, every single one of her accents grates and sounds false.

Great story. NOT so great narrator
I love all the books in the series, but I do NOT like this narrator. She is new to this series. She gives Daisy a squeaky, bubble headed voice, and she makes Piper sounds like he is 15. They need to switch back to one of the other two narrators. It has almost put me off of listening to this series.

Meh, it wasn't that bad or that great
We are well into the series, feeling fairly comfortable with our cast of characters and understand Daisy's world now.
The story held my intetest, but Daisy is becoming so annoying I almost quit this book. I'm sick of Daisy getting into trouble because of the asinine choices she makes, waiting there so cute and vulnerable, for the man folk to come and save her.....blah! Give us the old Daisy back because this configuration of her sucks.

Very slow development, even for a procedural.
OTOH, sentementalist that I am, I think the love interest lovely. Dislike reader's choice for the voice of the protagonist's flatmate. No one with the latter's life choice and talent would sound so much a empty-headed "bright young thing. "

Poor Narration
Would you try another book from Carola Dunn and/or Lucy Rayner?
Yes for Carola Dunn books, but I am having a hard time listening to Lucy Raynor's narration.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Daisy as usual. Love her ability to wiggle herself in and out of situations.
What didn’t you like about Lucy Rayner’s performance?
The voices she uses for characters are often grating, and don't suit the characters' personalities . . . and are often so similar that I would have to back up the story to listen a second time to determine who was saying what.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The redeeming bit was the story . . . the issue is that while I love the series, this narrator is going to be hard to listen to for me to get through the next books. I just listened to #8 & #9 but I will have to take some time away from listening to the series to forget how irritating the narrator was before I try the next ones.
