Story
One hundred and fifty years ago the world ended. Bombs fell, winter came, and the survivors fled underground in search of safety. Now they struggle to preserve what's left - sleeping by day, and battling fearsome vampiric fly-by-nights after sunset. Resources are scarce and security is scarcer in this fallout-poisoned world, but one subterranean clan of hardy souls clings to life - until their water supply goes catastrophically bad. Forced to seek a new life above, they leave their long-time home to caravan across the stricken planet's surface, where the light is toxic.

One day, it starts raining-and never stops. Global super-storms decimate the planet, eradicating most of mankind. Pockets of survivors gather on mountaintops, watching as the waters climb higher and higher. But as the tides rise, something else is rising, too. Now, in the midst of an ecological nightmare, the remnants of humanity face a new menace, in a battle that stretches from the rooftops of submerged cities to the mountaintop islands jutting from the sea. What hope does an already-devastated mankind have against this new supernatural adversary.

Barker reads his own work

Summary
Richard Garrison, a corporal in the British Military Police, loses his sight while trying to save the wife and child of millionaire industrialist Thomas Schroeder from a terrorist bomb. While Garrison is recovering from his injuries, Schroeder makes him an offer the young man cannot refuse - refuge at Schroeder's luxurious mountain retreat and rehabilitation from the best doctors who can treat Garrison's blindness and, if not cure him, at least teach him a new way of life.
But Thomas Schroeder has a secret. He is dying and determined not to lose his life. The doctors tell him his body cannot be saved. But about his mind? Garrison's healthy, young body would make an excellent replacement for Schroeder's failing corpus, if the machines to perform the operation can be perfected in time.
Garrison has no secrets of his own. Since the bombing that caused a loss of his sight, Garrison has become aware of new abilities slowly developing in his mind: mental powers he is beginning to master; strengths Schroeder cannot expect.
Richard Garrison and Thomas Schroeder, two strong-willed men locked in battle for the greatest prize - life itself.

Award for most grating narration
Always was an excellent story and series. However, the narration here is so robotic as to make you want to scream! Monotone, brutally flat diction with flat-line inflection throughout. Siri would sound better than this most annoying of voices.

Another Mind-Bending Classic from Lumley
I really enjoyed this audiobook. Lumley rarely disappoints as a writer and I was entertained throughout. It is very much in the same vein as Lumley's superb Necroscope series.
I enjoyed Gary Furlong's narration, though he does have a slightly odd rhythm to his delivery that takes a little while to get used to. He does a great job with the accents.

Riveting
While I found the first three quarters of this book riveting, the last quarter seemed endless as the story didn't really move anywhere but just kept going in circles. The last bit did my head in to the point I'll have to leave the next installment for a while before continuing. That I'm going to continue is a testament to how interesting the first 3/4 of the story was.
