Summary
Predator ships stream into human space in unprecedented numbers. The Colonial Marines, controlled by Weyland-Yutani, respond to the incursion, thus entering the Rage War. This terrifying assault by the Yautja cannot go unchallenged, yet the cost of combat is high.
Predators are master combatants, and each encounter yields a high body count. Then, when Lt. Johnny Mains and his marines - the VoidLarks - enter the fray, they discover an enemy deadlier than any could imagine.
Audiobook one in an epic trilogy that continues in Alien: Invasion and concludes in Aliens vs. Predator: Armageddon. The universe will forever be changed.
Tim Lebbon is the New York Times best-selling author of the movie novelisations of 30 Days of Night and The Cabin in the Woods.
He has also written many critically acclaimed horror and dark fantasy novels. Tim has won three British Fantasy Awards, a Bram Stoker Award, a Shocker and a Tombstone and been a finalist for the International Horror Guild and World Fantasy Awards.

In Space Nobody Hears You Sigh
Maybe I am being a bit harsh on this one . . . there is a decent story in here. The rationale that is drawn for the incursion of the Predators is actually clever and unexpected. There are some good action scenes and a couple of very powerful scenes. One involving a young girl called Luciana is particularly moving.
However, there were problems for me. Rather than being a story centered on these iconic monsters of Sci-fi it felt like one that merely used them as the monsters it required for the plot. In addition the narration is good for the most part but the very strong, tough female characters at the centre of the story were made to sound very “girlie” by both the dialogue and the voicing - sorry there must be a better word or phrase than “girlie” but I can’t think of another one that says quite what I mean.
What I really missed though is feeling the sense of dread of the aliens or the predators. It just wasn’t there for me and more time should have been spent stirring that up rather than the back story about the Founders. I will say that the scene set for the second book seems promising and it’s very possible that this will be a series that picks up momentum as it goes on. It could be that if I accept the role that the predators and aliens have been given which is a subservient one I’ll enjoy it more, but sadly I’m not completely sold on it yet.

In Space No One Can Hear You Yawn
Being a fan of the Alien and Predator franchises as well as a science
fiction fan in general, I mulled for a while about these series of Alien
Versus Predator books by Tim Lebbon. Reviews were a bit mixed so I left
them. I recently purchased the Alien: Out of The Shadows audio drama
co-written by said author which impressed me so seeing as book 2 of this
Rage War series was a freebie via a get two books for 1 credit deal, I had
now committed myself to the entire series.
This book starts the story but my first observation about it as I was
reading it was just how very slow things were to get moving. In retrospect,
I'd say that the entire first book was a bit contrived to stretch out the
build-up phase of this series such that nothing of any real interest
unfolded until quite late on. The book and the series as a whole uses the
format where we switch from character to character on a chapter basis and
having read all 3 books now I can say that this is fine and a lot of authors
segment their story telling this way but I found that the change of pace was
like sometimes moving off a roller coaster to very ponderous self musings
and introspection especially from the Lilia character in this first
instalment. Although I understand that characters need to be fleshed out and
often their thought processes or inner musings are required to do this, I
found that the pace of the story ground to a screeching halt as the author
went off into - at times - some naval gazing and the use of cerebral
narrative not best suited to material of this type.
As alluded to above, I got the distinct feeling that this book was mostly
padding before act 2 of the series. There are moments of action here that
are written well and certainly start to paint a picture of the wider
conflict to come but they are really too few and far between to keep the
story flowing.
Some story elements too were odd. The book begins in the 24th century as I
recall and yet the mention of a "hard Drive" for storage is made. This seems
very inconsistent and rather incongruous when mention of "Quantum Folds"
for storage are also made. The other minor thing I noted in this story and
the other 2 books was how distances were all in the ancient imperial system
of yards and miles. This small oversight from the author tends to suggest
that the writer has not placed himself into the future he's writing about as
especially in military terms, metric measurements are commonly used by even
the U.S military. Plus, this metric usage was reflected as I recall in the
movie Aliens seemingly set even before the time of this first book. Perhaps
none of the above niggles are even worth a mention but it irks the likes of
me as it suggests and amateurish undertone in the story writing and
consistency of the universe being depicted.
Narration is handled ably but I find John Chancer's rendering of the
characters and general tone to be perhaps more suited to the narration of
children's stories as his female and some male characters tend to sound like
some good and evil characters from a Disney cartoon. From all the books I've
listened to, I'd say that Mark Boyett would've made a better choice for
delivering this series of books. Still, Chancer's voice wasn't unpleasant
and, as I say, he delivered the story competently just not my first choice
for a book of this type.
I found the Johnny Mains character to be the most interesting and perhaps
in the best tradition of what an Aliens Versus Predator story would require.
Sure, his name reminds me of something a 50's Sci-fi comic book might have
come up with but his story thread was the most interesting by far to me.
The other small gripe I have is the reference to the date at the beginning
of most chapters. At the start of this book it can prove useful as there is
a distinct passage of time in the Lilia thread but thereafter it largely
feels superfluous and is best used when concurrent fast paced plot elements
are happening so not really needed here I felt so much.
This first instalment is painfully slow in places but does have flashes of
compelling action that help keep the reader interested. It's not a bad book
as such but it's relatively brief action sequences punctuated by lengthier
padding make it less appealing. This book is for the most part a launch
platform for books 2 and 3 and it shows.
The story concludes abruptly at a critical cliff hanger that then means that
you just must find out what happens next and so I did.
Not bad but could've been better.

Pretty Good.
Good story but it was a bit slow in places. Narrator was ok but his attempts at female voices was a bit strange in places.

whut?
Well performed. Confusing story timeline. The timeline/date relevance gets lost in the audio version and the author just cannot seem to decide which characters/situations are important and which are background colour.

Slow start but engrossing
I found it took a while to get interested in this book, but persevered and it became much much better. Very engrossing once you get a few chapters in an begin to understand the story. Performance was good, but I preferred other performances from other books I've had in Audible

slow start good middle and ending
after a bit of a slow start and trying to follow each main characters storyline it soon picks up and is pretty gripping and entertaining. a story set further into the future than other aliens predator books it's interesting to see the advancements in human technology. the second half of the book is strong and leads nicely towards the next book/chapter

At least he wrote a book!
Okay, so first thing is well done for writing a book, genuinely. However, there were a few things that didn't come across well.
Average conversation is
"Blah blah blah" said Bob
"Blah blah blah" said Terry
"Blah blah blah" said Joe
Really need to mix that up!
"Major Such-and-such was the youngest General in the Colonial Marines". This sort of error is prolific and is just odd to read.
Hero commentary made me throw up in my mouth a bit. "I've got the rear" he said. "You sure did the other night" she said (or something to that effect).
Narrator sounded bored, and that was playing the book at 1.5x. To be fair, I dont think it was his fault.
Got through 4 hours before I had to give up.

More Predator?
What did you like best about this story?
The parts to do with the Predators were my most favorite parts of this story. I like how mysterious they are and want to know more about them. I just wish there was more of the Preds, like their culture, habits, home lives and so on.
Any additional comments?
Good story overall though, really enjoyed it.
