  • Summary

  • Please note: This podcast contains references to suicide, domestic violence, and themes of a sexual nature.

Do you find it hard to talk to your sibling? The relationships we have with our siblings are more important than we often realise. How you were with your siblings is very important to how you are in the world. Therapy often focuses on romantic relationships or parent and child relationships but rarely does it consider brothers and sisters, and yet the sibling relationship is often the blueprint for how a person interacts with others throughout their lifetime.

In this new original series, Psychotherapist Philippa Perry explores six very different sibling relationships, and aims to bridge the communication gap within families. In a single intense session she goes under the skin of each of these relationships to find out what is working, what might not be working and how reflecting on this often overlooked relationship might benefit everyone involved.

In these frank and revealing conversations, there is laughter and also occasionally tears as Philippa sheds light on the inner workings of the sibling dynamic. If there is a conversation in your family that you have been meaning to have for a while, this podcast might help you finally gather the courage to talk.

Easy, interesting and insightful

I was already familiar with the presenter and author and really liked her book and the manner it was written.
Was absolutely delighted to find the podcast, and it has lived up to my expectation.
Sibling relationship hasn’t been covered much when it comes to the relationship topic, and I’m glad Philippa has decided to explore an overseen topic.

Incredibly powerful

As a trainee counsellor and a volunteer for a suicide support line I can honestly say this is an incredible set of sessions and highly recommended for counselling students.
Incredibly complex dynamics are delicately analysed and discussed.
I loved the therapists approach and genuineness which was warm, interested and challenging. She really held the space for the real work to begin.
Thank you Philippa for your generosity of spirit, your wisdom and sharing your sessions with us.
Let’s all get talking about feelings more xx

Emotional and hard hitting

Absolutely brought back the importance of the need to talk about our feelings and all feelings are valid.

Lump in throat beautiful

This set of podcasts are so gorgeous. They helped me to realise that there isn’t just one way to view our childhoods as siblings, and each of us are different people, our parents were different people in response to this so we did have different childhoods.
I walked up regularly listening to this series. I love my siblings and I understand them better now.

Important topic

Sibling relationships don’t get as much coverage as they’re worth so I’m glad this series exists. I didn’t appreciate her style of therapy though and maybe that’s just personal preference, maybe it’s the online format, I just felt like a lot of attunement was missing.

Interesting, moving, important and useful

I loved this podcast series, and all the conversations, but this one in particular. My sister and I recently stopped living together after 13 years and it was a huge change for both of us, but it seemed weird to feel and discuss that in a world so focused on romantic couple relationships. So this episode was validating and the ‘significant other’ concept helpful for me. The series shines a light on an area of human relationships that feels quite overlooked in society, and encourages listeners to reflect on their own experiences with siblings.

Extremely moving and fascinating

I so enjoyed this exploration of some of the longest relationships in our lives and hearing how different sibling pairs negotiate some hugely tough situations. Everyone was so brave in what they shared and how they opened up to each other. Hope there will be another series!

Spot on!

I learned the importance of sibling relationships through my own therapy. Philippa echoes that in this podcast. Valuable—for anyone, actually. Wish she would do more podcasts along this line. Really like her summaries of each conversation. Learned a lot! (4 stars on performance because one guy mumbled and I couldn’t understand him.)

Compelling and a window into fraternal relationships

Very insightful conversations and the participating siblings were surprisingly open to discuss very difficult situations. Resonated.

topics don't fit my circumstances

I didn't listen to all of them but cherry picked topics that seemed closest to me. and even then it was really close :) it was a good format to let each sibling speak about their view THEN bring them together.

Insightful, interesting podcast

Enjoyed exploring this dynamic of sibling relationships along with the participants. I could relate to a little bit of something from each part of the series - both in positive and introspective ways, in some cases. Each part explored a different dynamic of sibling relationships that I can relate to or could find situational experiences in my own life that placed me in similar “feels” - recommend this to anyone who either has a relationship they want to understand better, from childhood, or is interested in the base psychology of why we turn out the way we do as adults.
